How do you analyze your stats?

Hey Everyone,

This is my second season with OOTP. I have just finished up a current 2013 season with the Baltimore Orioles. I have a few questions....

1) How do you simulate your games/seasons? (e.g. play each play, sim each inning, sim whole game, etc.)

2) How do you analyze the statistics of your whole league? There is so much information and I don't think i've found an efficient way to analyze it. I want to get the most out of the game as possible.

3) How do you manage your scouting and prospects in the minors? This is one of the things that I have found the toughest to do, to take a step back from the MLB team and look at my farm.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

I take it series-by-series. I "play out" the first game of the series (but usually I only control substitutions and leave strategy to my manager) and sim the rest.

I don't know what you mean by this exactly. But I tend to look at things team-by-team, or player-by-player. For example at the beginning of the season I like to write up scouting reports on each team in my sub-league/division. At the all-star break I'll look for narratives -- what players are over-performing, or under-performing?

I evaluate all of my minor league players in the preseason, and decide if I want to promote, keep, or cut (generally I don't demote, I just cut). Usually this is just a quick evaluation based on their prior year stats. If it's a "prospect" with actual major league potential based on his scouted ratings I'll take a closer look to see where the minor league report recommends placing him and if I agree based on the ratings and stats. I check again in June/July to see if anyone is really dominating their level and merit an in-season promotion (often these are players who had fared poorly at their level last year and are repeating).

I play each game, but do half an inning at a time basically just so I can manage pitcher subs...if I need to rest my bullpen I may play pitch by pitch or single pitch for 6, 7th or 8th inning so I can watch how my pitcher is doing...but I seldom do this. On occasion I may throw in a PH. I find doing half-innings a game may only take 2-3 minutes to complete, and adds to the immersion.

I enjoy going through my minor league rosters every game month or so to see who needs promotion, demotion or more games under their belt. I spend a good amount of my game time messing with rosters (major and minor). I also keep a close eye on my batting lineup and pitching rotation to keep it humming at peak efficiency (with what success...thats questionable).

This is how I do it. I track every stat in the LTM section of the game and compare the year to year variation from the season ending csv report for all league levels. Even though autocalc works well there are certain outputs that need better fine tuning. Although it looks complicated I can set up for a new season in about 1 hour.

You have to be a little OCD to do this. I took 30 minutes to fine tune the settings when my league was at the AS break.

I seem to be somewhat rare as I prefer being manager to GM. I like to control my personnel. But, I do get really bored sometimes haggling over contracts and the like. I generally like to play out the games, though if I get a little OCD I might sim a week. I know my idea of player value isnt the same as a computer would play out-also factors in to why I prefer to play. (example, being I am more proactive, I like to steal some bases, while the AI no matter what seems to like a sit and wait approach regardless of skill set, at least in my experience. While depth charts and lineups solve the problem, there is always one D whiz in my middle infield, occasionally even 3B, that the AI would say "why is he playing". and of course, I would likely PH for him if behind from 6th inning on, which the AI might not do)

For my minors, I dont really have a set way to do it. (judging from the way pitchers develop in other team systems, I get the idea that to get maximum development, you have to promote/demote now and again regardless of performance just for the heck of it, in an older OOTP a prospect in another system I was keeping an eye for trade possiblities got moved among AA/AAA/MLB something 8 times in one year. He went from AAA to Majors to AA (and i forget after that, but he did that part by mid-May). Main thing is, I tend to have my biggest evaluations around draft time. That is when I tend to have most of my releases. Make room for the new. I like to re-evaluate at the 1st of the month, and that is when a lot of my promotion/demotions happen. With the exception of a few prospects, minors can sometimes get tedious. Never take your scouts word for it. In OOTP, the dumbest baseball people are scouts it seems. I actually wish sometimes they were just a little bit worse, so they can be in the "reliably unreliable" category. So I can make decisions exactly the opposite.

I play seasons only, with month-by-month adjustments to line-ups and pitching, because I come up with so many ideas on what historical teams to play and how to play. Rarely do I include minors. And no finances - I tried it once and didn't like dealing with it. Trading is quite intriguing and challenging (hard, low frequency). I check my team's stats regularly, both individual and compared to the league, plus who the league leaders are. No fictional play either; the farthest I've ever gotten is 2016 and I lost interest.
