Player ratings not improving?
I played out 2013 with the Red Sox. Due to Mike Napolis season being cut short in May via concussion, I was forced to use Mike Carp (rating 21) at first. He ended up hitting 30 home runs, albeit a .252 average. I was expecting his rating to improve based in part on his solid season, but at the start of 2014 he is still a 21. same happened to Daniel Nava (also a 21) who posted a .770 OPS over 450 at bats but didn't improve rating wise.
What does this have to do with most likely? Age? And how does this predict their performances next year? Will they perform at 2013 levels this next season or were they just "lucky"? |

Improvement is not based on how good a player's season is, at least not solely. This is not EA (thank goodness). There are a number of factors that influence player development, including but not necessarily limited to coaching, remaining potential, performance, intelligence, and work ethic.

Have Carp and Nava had some injuries in their past?
copied from the online manual... Injuries often cause a player's development to slow, or could even cause his skills to regress. Injuries can immediately affect a player's current ratings and his potential ratings. The more severe an injury is, the more likely that the player's ratings will suffer. See Injuries and Fatigue for more information. |

If you don't have "AI Evaluation" checked, player ratings will be 100% based on scouting ratings instead of recent performance. If you put AI evaluation weight to 100% "previous year statistics", and click that checkbox, then I bet that you'd see a bump up in their ratings.

One of the first things I do in all my of Red Sox MLB starts is to trade away Napoli while he still has value. You can get someone like Rizzo for very cheap at the start of the game.

Make sure the related "Use AI Evaluation Instead Of..." setting is checked. I made that mistake for about 2 years in my last league, and suddenly the AI got a whole lot less stupid once I actually activated it. The percentages do nothing without that checkbox.
