Paul Clemens, what did I do right...

or did I just get lucky?

If you are talking about him acquiring another pitch, and a good one at that, then it's a matter of luck. It's also interesting to me in that I've never seen the game do that before.

Not only that but he went from a 2 star potential to a 4.5 star potential in about 6 months at the age of 25/26.

Happened to Austin Wates in my game. Sometimes, you just get lucky.

I've seen it happen to a smaller degree with two veteran pitchers in one of my online league teams. In my situation they didn't gain a pitch but suddenly were able to stop walking batters and both had stellar performance at the tail end of their careers. One was a disappointment for most of his career (think Koufax) the other was a washed up minor leaguer who I took a shot at. He was a good pitcher for three years at the MLB level but up until that time he was nothing more then a good AAA level workhorse. Unfortunately the league had to be restarted and I never got to see how much longer they would have lasted. One was 37 and the other was 38 or 39.

I've seen this rapid ratings bump happen a few times, but in every case the ratings bump is short lived. They might hold for a season or two and then decline (usually rapidly) after that. I've never had it with a pitcher before, so hopefully you hit the jackpot. It's usually 1B's for me, and they do give me a couple decent years, but end up trade bate once the decline starts. I had one guy get sudden bumps at age 28 on my AAA squad, which is weird because usually after 25 not much happens in the way of positive ratings bumps.

Its especially weird because he hasn't even played very well at AAA.

I just realized that this guy's last name is Clemens. He isn't related to Roger, is he? If so, that might explain things . . .

I've picked up random 23-24 year olds in the free agent pool for depth for my ML club (2-2.5 star ceiling players) and have had a couple turn into 4-5 star superstars.

Good coaching maybe?

Found a guy in the 2015 offseason in my Astros game. Some default guy named Tim Kiley (I think, don't have the game open). He was released from some org back in 2013, and now he's a 75/45/70 reliever who was willing to take a minor-league deal at 27. I stuck him in AAA to see if he really turns out to be a high-K, low-BB, high-HR pitcher. One month in, and he's not doing too bad.

This is where he's pretty much ended up.

Seems like a standard middle-tier player value in MLB. Good player to have during his pre-FA years, mostly worthless after that.
