Trading for a player who has cleared waivers

I'm trying to offload some dead reliever salary. Miami offered a player with a league minimum salary, who'd cleared waivers and was demoted to AAA.

I know I have to give up a spot on the 40-man roster since he has a major league contract, but do I have to give him a spot on the active roster, too?

Depends if he has option years remaining or not. If he does then you can option him to the minors. If he doesn't then he has to go on your active roster as well.
