Expansion Draft Stars Available?
I attempted to replicate the rules from the most recent expansion draft. The only change I made was going from protecting players with less than three years of ML experience and changing it to two years since in the last draft the rule was you could not take a player that was drafted the previous two seasons.
Boy did that make a bunch of all-stars available! I don't understand how some of these guys are not protected: Strasburg Chapman Sale Harper Kipnis Moore Profar Machado The list continues. How could the Nationals elect to protect Chad Tracy, but not protect Strasburg or Harper? Last edited by Living Lejuhnd; 07-06-2013 at 11:57 PM. |

Is this an expansion in the 2013 MLB quickstart before doing anything else? Or is this a few years down the line?

25 players protected and all players with less than 2 years MLB experience auto protected. |

You need to keep the auto-protection at 3 years, otherwise the AI makes some bad decisions, particularly with young stars.
Hopefully we will see improvements in a future patch, but for now you need to protect younger players. If you want to make more players available, lower the standard protected list size. |

So, I'm living with the 15 and auto-protection at 3 years - which still means a few big players escape protection in favor of some 1-stars (e.g., 4-star Al Leiter grabbed in Round 1 by Arizona). |

Don't contracts play a role in whether or not a player is protected? For example, if you've got a guy whose contract you don't want, wouldn't you leave him unprotected and hope the expansion team took him?

Yeah whenever I expand from the MLB Quickstart, you have to eat some unfavourable contracts to get decent non-relievers at times

However, I've definitely seen the AI leave players unprotected when they have expiring contracts and will become free agents. You never want to draft those players because they are still free to sign elsewhere. |
