Trying my hand at creating a baseball card template...and so far, failing miserably.

How do you figure out the x, y, and all that for the xml code? I thought Paint.net was supposed to tell you that stuff, but so far I can't figure it out.

Here's my template. Right size, so far as I can tell. The proper areas are alpha'ed, but it doesn't show here.

And my xml code needs HUGE work. Can anybody help? I cut and pasted some xml from other card sets, and tried to change it, but couldn't figure out how to determine the x, y, height, and width values. The fonts and colors should be good to go though, I think. I might need to do something else to fiddle with the picture border for team colors, maybe? I am SO freaking lost.

I even downloaded Paint.net because it supposedly told you those x-y values, but if it does, I can't figure out how or where. Or in GIMP, which is what I normally use.

Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to be able to make these myself, so I don't have to ask other people to make them all the time. Thanks!

Crap! I thought I had it figured out, but OOTP keeps giving me a "Invalid output image width value" error message every time I try to make a card. Okay, what in the crap am I doing wrong, exactly?

For <PICTURE width="533" height="311"> it should be 537 for the width. That may be what's giving you the error.

If you're using blue in the trialpha layer you need to change "trialpha_red=..." to blue.

Haven't used GIMP in a long time and never tried Paint.net so I'm not sure exactly how to get the position and dimensions in them, wish I could help you out more with those.

For the player pic you probably want y at about 35 or too much of the cap might be covered by the top of the card.

I changed the width to 537, AND redid the template, but I'm still getting the error. Not sure if there's something up with something else later in the xml, or my template's still a bit off somehow, or what.

Could the problem be that I saved it as an xml document in Microsoft Word, then uploaded it to OOTP? I noticed none of the other card templates are Word documents. Problem is, I have no idea how or on what system they were saved. And Word is the only program I have that will even do xml docs.

The "first name last name" text element for the front of the card is missing the beginning quotation in the x value.

Tried that, but no dice. STILL getting the error message. Either my xml is off elsewhere, or OOTP just doesn't like 1987 ProCards.

Yep, most errors I've run across are format issues (like the missing ") or using an invalid token.

I don't have a good way of determining x/y/z. And spacing things is definitely the hard part, particularly the text. I ususally just try to copy someone else's good spacing and move/modify as necessary.

Stick with it, you'll get it eventually.

I wouldn't use MS Word to make your xmls, they probably add a bunch of junk when you save it in their format. You can use Notepad to edit the xml files or there maybe a free program out there that could be easier to use (I use an old copy of Dreamweaver that a friend gave me after he upgraded).

Can y be -5? I've never used negative values. Seems like that would technically be off picture.

I also use WordPad.

I already noticed that and fixed it awhile ago, but thanks for trying. I'm about to cry uncle on this one. I can't figure out what the heck's wrong. The sad thing is, it's probably something horribly obvious that I'm just overlooking.

I have WordPad, but couldn't figure out how to save as xml in it. What do you have to do? Maybe I have an older version or something?

Edit: Found the error with number of seasons in some of the lines (changed it to make them all five seasons)...and of course, STILL getting the error message. WTF, as the kids say.

Can y be -5? I've never used negative values. Seems like that would technically be off picture.

I also use WordPad.

You can have negative values for the x or y position.

I know you don't have the sizes of your text area but make sure the font_y_size isn't larger than the height of the element (or at least within 1 or 2). You had one element with a height of 4 and a font_y of 12 or 14 and I was getting a font error until I changed the height. Also if you want the multiple spaces in the player bio you need to do " ". I added one in the above code for you to see.

I figured out how to save it in Notepad. Now OOTP gives me a different, more specific error message.

"XML parsing error"
"not well-formed (invalid token) at line 20"

Okay, line 20...any idea what the invalid token might be, folks?

You're missing a beginning quotation in your updated code. It's in the first element in the Personal Data - Front (which is line 20 of the code).

Fixed it. But I'm still getting that error message. And it shows lines from align-"shrink" in the first line in "personal data front" to the font name="vera" line in the second line of "personal data back" in the error message. So the problem must be somewhere in there. Something in the font sizes, maybe? Or the z-orders?

Hmm, looks like the back is pretty much good to go, with either minimal tweaking or removing the border. But the front...hoo, boy! That'll take some work. Let me try the cut and paste of your post and see if that fixes the problem.

Invalid token error shouldn't be formatting. Is PERSON_FIRST_NAME and PERSON_LAST_NAME a token? I know I looked up one of my old templates and I just have [%PERSON_NAME].

ThatSeventiesGuy - I got a font error at first also. I made a couple of changes and this file finally worked for me and gave me the result in a previous post. I'm not 100% positive but try it out and if it works you might have a font x or y size that is way too big for the width or height that you assigned (I think the game can handle a small overage but maybe at some size difference it's too much).

klavier Major Leagues Join Date: Jan 2011 Location: FL Posts: 396	For <PICTURE width="533" height="311"> it should be 537 for the width. That may be what's giving you the error. If you're using blue in the trialpha layer you need to change "trialpha_red=..." to blue. Haven't used GIMP in a long time and never tried Paint.net so I'm not sure exactly how to get the position and dimensions in them, wish I could help you out more with those. TribeFanInNC Hall Of Famer Join Date: Oct 2007 Posts: 4,019	Yep, most errors I've run across are format issues (like the missing ") or using an invalid token. I don't have a good way of determining x/y/z. And spacing things is definitely the hard part, particularly the text. I ususally just try to copy someone else's good spacing and move/modify as necessary. Stick with it, you'll get it eventually.
