One Year Wonder Hall of Fame

The Vladimir Guerrero thread mentioned Dontrelle Willis and that got me to thinking about some of the great one year wonders from MLB.

Dontrelle was a mid-level starter for two years before gaining national prominence in 2005 going 22-10 with a 2.63 ERA and finishing 2nd to Chris Carpenter in the Cy Young voting.

Willis went 12-12 with a 3.87 ERA the following year before falling apart the next year. Dontrelle never recovered and finished his Major League career with a 72-69 record and a 4.17 ERA.

While his career numbers are reasonable, he's really only known for his one remarkable year where everything seemed to come together and made him into a star. His career meltdown later on has helped make him the first selection into the One Year Wonder Hall of Fame.

1st Ballot

Joe Charbonneau
Mark Fidrych
Mark Prior
Phil Plantier

50/50

Bob Hamelin
Snuffy Stirnweiss
Rick Wilkins
Jacoby Ellsbury

Outside Shot

Brady Anderson
Bobby Thigpen
Jim Hickman
Cy Seymour
Bob Hazle

There are a lot of players that fall into the "enhanced" (i.e. PED) or "war year" (i.e. everyone was away in the military) categories. I fail to acknowledge the first category.

My favorite example is Snuffy Stirnweiss, if only because of his name. He led the AL in all sorts of categories in 1944 and 1945, then basically became a utility IF for the rest of his career. Apparently, Joe Gordon and Scooter Rizzuto were better.

The-pitcher-formerly-known-as-Fausto-Carmona certainly applies. Of course, he was probably already 30 by the time he had his great season. I fondly remember Super Joe Charbonneau as well.

I think if his career ended now he would be a lock for this Hall of Fame (Shame?)

Wilkins played 10 years but really only had one productive one so I think he could deserve inclusion. Seymour looked tobepretty good and Hickman had a few productive years, though none like his big one.

I think these guys fit in with Hickman wherever he belongs. Especially Thigpen, he was a really good closer but then fell off drastically.

These guys could definitely be in, especially Prior. Injuries ultimately did him in but but he only had that one great year.

Hamelin wasn't as big of a standout and had two decent years but was a bust otherwise. I remember him as the AAA beast. Just could never do it in the Bigs.

Two really goos years and then mediocrity. Lol. That's crazy. He definitely fits on some kind of has been list,

Absolutely!

I've upated the first post where I think some of these guys belong with links to their BBREF pages. We can "induct" them officially as compelling cases are made.

I guess Phil Bradley is more of a 2 or 3 year wonder. But I always thought he was very under appreciated, under the radar. Because he played on the horrible pre-Griffey Mariners...

Wonder what happened to him. His OBP was still very good as he faded out of the league barely into his 30's.

1985 WAR, Position players

1. Henderson (NYY) 9.9
2. Boggs (BOS) 9.1
3. Brett (KCR) 8.2
4. Barfield (TOR) 6.9
5. Mattingly (NYY) 6.4
6. Murray (BAL) 5.6
7. Ripken (BAL) 5.6
8. Gedman (BOS) 5.4
9. Gibson (DET) 5.3
10. Bradley (SEA) 4.8

Pretty good company to finish behind.

Jerome Walton comes to mind, but not sure if he would qualify.

First guy I thought of. A justly celebrated couple of months, followed by total collapse. Out of baseball by 1959.

What about Rich Coggins, 1973 Orioles?

If the title was one month wonders, I would go with Chris Shelton

Sure, he's only 28, but Danny Valencia could end up on this list.

Edit: I guess he's more of a half-year wonder.

edit: and Johnny Estrada won a silver slugger in 2004, but other than that year his career OPS was worse than .700: http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...strajo01.shtml. Although I guess he was more of a two-year wonder.
