Spring training tasks?

So I'm in my first spring training now, after my first regular season and I've done enough player movement, hired coaches, and so on during the off-season.

I'm asking a general advice question. What spring training tasks are good to do? I don't play the games, I let the AI do that. Also, I'm just a GM, so I don't control lineups. I noticed after the 1st spring game that a ton of players played, and the number of pitchers used for both teams looked right. The starters went only an inning or so, and a lot of MR's came in.

One specific question: Do I have to play out the game to get certain guys an at bat?

Side note: I have set a few minor league players to play out of position (SS playing 3B) to get them time there. Do I have to directly control this, or does the "set position to" setting remain, even though I'm not the field manager?

Ok, so more than one question...

Followup: After 2 spring games, it looks like only players on the 40 man (mine says 36/38 man) roster are appearing in spring games. Do other minor league players get playing time, say in "phantom" or "hidden" games? I'd like to know because of what I said before, the guys I'd like to learn new defensive positions and so on...

As far as I know, minor league players don't play in spring training unless they're on your 40 man roster

Your 40-man roster becomes your ML roster for the duration of Spring Training. Everyone on the 40-man becomes usable, and anyone not on the 40-man is essentially not invited to Spring Training. So therefore, no, they don't play any games.
