Starting a new league
I am planning on creating a historical dynasty where I take over the Yankees in 2000 and play out the 21st century. I want, for 2000-12, to have the historical rookies debut in their actual years and with their actual teams.
So, I know that I would check the option for historical rookies and turn off the amateur draft is how I would have each player debut for the proper team. But, I see a big problem once I reach 2013. Since the game won't be creating amateur players each year, there would be an absence of prospects who have been progressing towards the majors. It seems to me that I will have to wait for a few years worth of draft classes to mature before I have a realistic pool of minor league prospects. It seems like the only prospects I will have when 2013 comes around are players who are already been imported into the game for cup of coffee call ups. And, even then, how could OOTP determine that someone like Trevor Bauer should be a prospect when it all to go by his 2012 rookie stats? Does anyone have any advice on how to get around this issue? |

I have never noticed this happening. The few times I have run leagues past the actual year of available rookies, the game does a decent job of producing players for the draft. If you use feeder leagues (I never do) that should help even more.

I don't mean that I'm concerned about drafts going forward once I hit 2013.
My concern is, once it's 2013, I won't have a preceding few years worth of drafted players who have been working their way through the system, in order to have realistic minor league systems already in place. Sure, once there have been a few drafts from 2013 on, things will be better off. But, there seems to me to be a few years where I won't have that. |

You should not need minors before 2012, maybe a reserve roster of 10-20 players. Once you hit 2012 you can add a layer of minors each season or two until you have your minors where you want them.
This happens with historical leagues set up the way you are doing it. It will work, with a 10-20 man reserve you should have enough "extra" players to protect against injuries. Now that I think about it... I am not sure if a reserve roster will screw up your financials. You caould also just leave the minors set up and turn on ghost players. It will look really funky for a few seasons until 2016? or so.

It's those funky years from 2013-16(??) that I'm trying to see if I can find a solution for.
Maybe I think I just thought of one. After the 2012 season, I can export the rosters. Then, I can create a new temp world using the 2013 quick start and can use that to export those rosters. Using Excel, I can filter out everyone whose major league experience isn't 0 years, 0 days. Then, I can cut and paste that into the OOTP exported spreadsheet and reimport into OOTP. I'll have to run a test league to make sure this would work as well in practice as I think it works in theory. I just can't do it tonight. It's going to be a late night watching Scandal, so I won't be getting onto the computer until pretty late. |
