Who To Take #2 Overall?

I have the #2 overall pick in the 2013 Amateur draft as the Cubs. Which of these guys should I take?

That's a rather paltry choice at #2 overall; all of their stats are either from high school, or an "average" college. But, given the options, I would either go with the lefty, or the sinkerball pitcher. (the ones that were too big)

Yeah. I don't use feeder leagues anymore. I was noticing that there were only a handful of decent prospects in each draft.

This is off-topic, but it's disappointing that a guy has the nickname "The Cuban Missile" when he was born in Colorado.

Hmmm, I guess it depends on a few things.

If you take the sinker pitcher, is your infield of a suitable quality (or going to be) to handle the ground balls coming their way?

What are you like financially? Maybe you have to take the sinker pitcher as he is the cheapest option?

I personally very rarely take a player who has a "negative" personality, regardless of what it is.

I like everything about "slugs" apart from his 1 point changeup.

Yeah, if you don't care about his personality, Vlad is my guy. If you do, hmmmm, maybe "The Colorado Missile"

I would take the sinkerballer. All the players seems to have similar overall rating potentials and ages, and he has the pleasantly high groundball rate and the potential for a strong 4th pitch. I think that makes it marginally more likely for him to reach his stuff potential.

I play with personality ratings off, though, since I'm generally not a fan of simulated personality impacts, so I can't really gauge how important the personality factor is.

Take Steve Simpson the guy has outstanding both movement and control and he has 4 potential plus pitches!

He'll obviously take some time to grow, but dude looks like a star.

McCormick is far more developed, is a lefty, and has a chance to make a more immediate impact. He's also quite good at holding runners and is really strong at sacrifice bunting if you're not using the DH. However, his control is suspect, so he's probably not ready to go just yet, and he's only got three pitches, so that's the main drawback for him. Also, his potential is not as high as a couple of the others.

Simpson has perhaps the biggest upside and has a fourth pitch along with the potential for all pitches to be outstanding.

I think it's definitely a choice between these two. I'd be inclined to go with the player who is more developed at this point, but I don't play fictionals much, so I wouldn't trust my judgment.

I went with Quick and he sucked it up big time in rookie ball. Oops

McCormick or Simpson depending on what your looking for.

They look like similar talent levels, it would seem like McCormick would have a lower cieling but a higher floor, no matter what he should be a solid starter, but may never be a Cy Young winning ace, Simpson seems like the better pitcher and has a higher ceiling, but is more likely to become a bust. Not a fan of the other two.

If im looking at it, i see it as

McCormick should be a #2,3 or 4 starter
Simpson would most likely end up as a #1 or #5

If im the 2013 Cubs, i'm probably taking McCormick only because the Cubs need some pitching depth, you'll probably get another high pick for 2014 in which to take that boom or bust pitcher to be your ace

Not every prospect is awesome in their first year of professional baseball. Can you say small sample size?

Give him five seasons before you judge him.

I think he was just saying so far this is what was happening...not that he regrets it yet.

What's more disappointing is that Missile is spelled wrong.

Seriously, I would have gone with the Impaler guy but Quick was my 2nd choice.

I would've gone Quick as well. That velocity's only gonna trend up from here and it's one of the few 'ratings' that has significant effect and that can't be diluted from scouting reports (as far as I can tell).

Even though you already picked, I'm still going to say what I was going to say.

I would pick Simpson or McCormick.

Simpson has the potential to be better than McCormick, but McCormick is a bit more developed and a bit more of a guarantee.

I like Robinson honestly. I have had great success with high control/movement pitchers. I wouldn't be shocked to see him winning Cy Young awards in the future.
