How Many Of You Use Scouts?

I have always used scouts in my MLB games, but am thinking of maybe trying without scouts this time around. What are your thoughts?

Only started doing so with 14, like the searching they do and players they find for the international complex, can find some great prospect there.

No scouts is the path to the Dark Side. No scouts leads to lack of challenge. Lack of challenge leads to boredom. Boredom leads to stats only.

I'm still torn on this. And I know when you start a new MLB game, it only has like 10 scouts available to sign. So usually I create 100 more just have some choices.

What's driving you to consider playing without scouts? Are you looking for a more challenging game or just curious what it might be like?

Just curious as I have always played with scouts. Just wanted some input on it.

I rely heavily on a good scout when it comes to drafting. For trades I rely on stats and I will look at ratings to make sure he can field the position I need him to play. I made the mistake of trading for a 38 yr old Ozzie Guillen batting .372 in 34 g 76 AB but he was DH/bench who had fielding ratings on 1 at all positions. I play in a non DH league so Ozzie saw 19 AB's as a PH before I manually retired him. I will look at the scouting report almost every January, start of ST and OD after that the only time I talk to him is for the Ammy draft.

I use scouts when I play fictional- but I generally don't use scouts (or use them at 100% accuracy) when I play MLB quickstart because I "know" how good the players and the scouting assessments can be pretty incongruent with their actual abilities.

I use scouts, but I have the accuracy on very low. I rely on my scout for the draft mostly, but I take his report into consideration for prospects as long as the stats back up the claim.

And stats only is also the best way to play the game (as well as the greatest challenge). :P

No. A desire to play less of a game and more of a simulation is what leads to stats only.

Depends..if you play rating scale 2-8 stats become a major factor...especially with the new player creation algorithm (much more mediocre players)

Waaaaaaay too many mediocre players. Not enough variety.

I agree with PSUColonel. In 13 and earlier it was easy to wait around for talent that was at least average in everything. Now you almost have to make do with players with holes, sometimes major ones, in their games. I've had to personally change what I think of as a useful MLB player.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion. Personally I don't like having organizations that are 95+% trash.

Are scouts incompatible with stats only? Can one set things up so that scouts only give you their verbal comments ("destined to be a minor leaguer") and no numerical ratings? Is that "stats only"? Or do scouts always provide ratings too?

If you have scouts enabled but have all the ratings set to not be shown, you still get the verbal reports.

Thanks. So do "stats only" purists refuse even that, "verbal-only" use of scouts? I'm in an online league now that relies primarily on stats, but we do get verbal scout reports and a couple of the "other" ratings. I could live without the "other" ratings. But I think the verbal reports are neat, and I'd miss having them.
