Severly Punished for Simming.
Is it supposed to severely punish you for wanting to sim a bunch of games?
So far, in three different seasons. I simmed roughly 4 weeks with the yankees by hitting "finish week" and I think I won 4 out of 20 games at the most. Does this game work best when actually playing the games? |

And I won the world series 4 years in a row and lost in the 5th. If you have the right pieces in place, It shouldn't matter how you do it. |

Interesting. I typically let the CPU set up everything "lineup and rotation"....and lose a ton.

My only issue would be if I could lock someone in, for instance, a young up and coming player who should be in the lineup but when the comp sets it up, they send him to the minors. I wish you could lock that one guy in and then hit the button and he stays. Really it is all about trading for young prospects, always look at the active players list by potential and keep your eye out for those 18-21 year olds that haven't budded into greatness yet. trade for them. and build from your rotation out. AND this year, you can generally get some good pitching prospects in the draft toward the back end of the first and second round in the draft. Snatch them up and if you get an abundance of pitchers, trade them for position players. Pitchers are worth more in the trade market. With great pitching, you can still win with a mediocre team. Problems with simming the week
In versions 11 and 12, I found that the AI will sometimes keep a player in the lineup after he has been injured enough to seriously reduce his performance for, say, three days. I do not yet know if iOOTP13 acts this way.
If you have not chosen the setting that notifies you of everything and pauses the sim, this could be a problem. And if you set your rotation rigidly, the AI will sometimes start a tired pitcher. And the AI will not bench a "cold" player, although I do not know if being "cold" diminishes performance or is merely a wake-up call to inattentive players. And if you let the AI set the depth chart, and the depth chart's choice about how frequently to substitute fielders, you might get some unhappy results. The AI is not strong at this. And if you do not have the lineup set to let the AI make changes, you might make depth chart changes that are ignored. For these reasons I seldom sim a whole week. |

I agree. The game is for everyone to play and enjoy their own way.

First of all, yeah, let's ratchet down the attitudes a notch. Everyone plays the way they want to. It's all good.
RE letting the AI set things up or not and dimming through vs. playing: Last year, I started a 1993 Phillies season on my iPhone. When I bought an iPad, I moved the saved game there and continued the season. I ended up missing first place by a few games. I don't play out every game, but I always set my lineups and pitching rotations, and I always play out playoff games, as well as any key games during the final couple weeks of the season, if a division title hangs in the balance. For the heck of it, I continued that season on my iPhone (I think I was up to May or June when I moved the save to my iPad), but I kept hitting the "Let the AI set up everything" button and just simmed all the way through the rest of the season, never playing out any games. I won over 100 games (I think it was 115 or 120 games) and won the World Series. Go figure. |

I sim everything, week at a time through the seasons, and watch (but don't manage) playoffs. I play it as a GM game, not managerial. Trades are mine, as are call ups and draft picks. I put the team together and let the manager do his thing. It's how I enjoy it. It would drive me nuts micromanaging everything.

you can control this essentially. Set the depth chart you want to use, by placing that up and coming player in the starting position against LH/RH pitchers. Then ask the computer to set up lineups, NOT "everything". He will stay starting and not be sent to the minors.

You can ensure they're on the 25 man roster, but you can't ensure playing time, which is a bit annoying when the coach refuses to play someone in favor of some single A guy who shouldn't be there

I kind of do a mixed bag depending on my mood and where I am at with the franchise I am running.
Opening few weeks of the season, big games and playoffs I'll usually watch my games on an inning-by-inning basis. I let the CPU manage the in-game situations. The only time I actually watch the play-by-play is late-innings in important games when it is close to really ratchet up the drama. I do manually manage the rosters, rotations, line-ups and depth charts unless my team is terrible and I am trying to rebuild. In that case, I'll make sure the key guys I am building around get playing time but outside of that, I'll let the CPU decide then sim on a week-by-week basis to try and accelerate the game. One of the things I love about the game is that you can really be flexible with how in-depth you get. I can get an entire season in while waiting at the doctors office or I can let the suspense of a single World Series linger a week or more as I get a moment here or there during my day to watch an inning of play-by-play drama. |
