OOTP: A "gift for the guy in your life" + Father's Day

Fidel brought up some interesting ideas in a thread in our Beta forum, and since most people don't have access to it, I wanted to put them out here so we can field some thoughts. (Thanks for putting the ideas out there, Fidel.)

Fidel was talking about going against conventional wisdom when marketing a product, and he was wondering about targeting women who are looking for a gift for their husband/boyfriend. OOTP would be the perfect gift, of course.

His idea is a great one, but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on where we should start. Any web sites that would be ideal for such messaging? I can put together a press kit and contact those sites.

I think we would also benefit from positioning OOTP as an ideal Father's Day gift, and maybe those women-oriented sites would be good for that too.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I'm skeptical of this idea because I wouldn't expect there to be much of an exposure opportunity given budget limitations and the nature of the marketing channels that normally target women consumers. At best, something like OOTP might get a mention in an article on various gift ideas, but I would consider it unlikely.

The best approach would be to identify some bloggers for women's interest magazines and send them an email and possibly a press kit. Large circulation or consumption outlets may be tough to crack, even for its blog sites, but there could be some Internet-only and/or digital sites or publications that may be more viable channels. If there are any independent women bloggers that have sizable followings, then those might be possibilities too.

Thanks for the link, Orwell.

Charlie: I agree that large outlets probably won't cover us. I'm hoping to target bloggers and smaller sites that do gift guides for men. Especially with Father's Day coming up, I think there are opportunities for OOTP to be featured in lists of gifts for men.

Even a mention with a link could help us, since OOTP could be a unique gift for a woman struggling to think of what to buy for her husband/boyfriend who loves baseball.

Well, I know many baseball fans that are males that have no idea how to use a computer.

In fact the guys I know that are baseball fans don't use a computer and are not gamers in anyway whatsoever.

Now if you can find a way to target female gamers that are married then maybe you have an idea but I think the idea in itself might not yield such great results.

IMO this will be a hard sell. Especially since you are not purchasing a physical product but instead are getting a product key.

Try some of the more popular couponing web sites. My wife is always on them and has groups of other friends on them. Etsy.com is another site you should look into. Just going through the wife's list of mom sites.

I think this is a great idea to get OOTP out there.

Try blogs or message boards frequented by women who are afraid their men are cheating on them.

"Looking for a way to keep your man at home where you can keep an eye on him? Rather have him in front of a computer for hours at a time instead of out getting himself in trouble? HAVE WE GOT THE PRODUCT FOR YOU!"
