Strike seasons

How does OOTP handle strike-shortened seasons? Does it play out the shortened schedule? The 162 game schedule that would have occurred had the strike been averted? Does it ask you which one you want to play out?

It depends on how you are generating the schedule. If you are using an as-played historical schedule file that includes only the historically played games, then it will be a strike-shortened schedule. If you are using an original historical schedule file, then it will not be as-played, so the season will not be strike-shortened. If you are using a game-generated fictional schedule, then it will not be strike-shortened, unless you manually edit the schedule, or set the number of games to the strike-shortened number prior to generating the schedule. So, it doesn't ask you, you tell it.

Thanks for that answer. Is the original historic schedules anywhere for download?

the 'as-played' schedules should be in your schedule folder.

To add to this there should be 2 schedules for each MLB year. One That's just major_league_ml_c_(year). That is essentially the schedule for that year as it was released during the preseason. There will be a second file with _ap after the year which is the "as played" schedule which will include rainouts(preset but still there) and make up games as well as being shortened due to strike.

So prior to each season you could choose either schedule? So if a team got rained out in let's say mid May and had a make up game scheduled at the very end of the season that originally was for a playoff spot you could choose that schedule? I did not know this.

The as played schedules follow exactly the way the games in MLB were actually played during a season with two exceptions:

(1) Any games that ended in a tie in real life are removed since obviously OOTP cannot guarantee the game will end in a tie. (Tie games in MLB are replayed in their entirety; in effect it's the same as if the game were postponed except that the player statistics from tie games do count.)

(2) Any tiebreaking playoff games that were played are likewise removed from the as played schedules (since obviously those games are only there because the teams involved finished in a tie).

Note that with as played schedules—especially in earlier seasons—clubs may end up finishing the season with differing number of games played. You could, for example, have a club finishing a half game behind for a division title due to the way the schedule in real life unfolded.

So, I guess anytime during the offseason period I can go into Options and manually select the schedule? Kool. I never knew there were other schedules in there.

Yep, except if I'm not mistaken you need to wait until preseason begins. Also it will continue to use the same type of schedules until you change to a different type. So if you choose an 'as played' schedule it will continue to use the 'as played' schedules until you switch it or the league no longer matches the set up of that particular year.
