Online Leagues?

Hey guys, I have been playing OOTP for awhile now since I stumbled on the game by chance but have never done an online league since I was always a late buy kind of guy. Well this year I said "pre-order it and be a real fan" and was wondering what are the online leagues all about?

How do they work? Are they successful? I am bored of fantasy baseball on sites like ESPN and thought online leagues would sound fun? If anyone starts up a "first timers" league or anything like that let me know!
