Velocity Rating

I've played this game awhile and I still can't figure out what the point of the velocity rating is. If there is a separate rating for Strikeouts, what does velocity affect?

I believe it only affects the play by play...so the pbp text will display the speed/velocity of the pitches.

If this is true, why would anybody train velocity in spring training?

Just a guees, but if he has slower velocity and slower pitches, then his talent in avoiding hits might drop, his talent in getting k's might drop, etc.

I think putting lots of points into velocity in spring training would tend to increase your K rating, but it probably doesn't have any relationship with the purely cosmetic velocity rating that you see on the player cards.

That's a good point though- maybe the name of the spring training category should be changed to avoid confusion about this.

I've also noticed (although unofficially) that my better stikeout pitchers (in solo historical league)are the ones with higher velocity.

In OOTP 5 this rating is also used in the player development algorythm. I.e., when you have a guy throwing real hard but has a low talent level in Ks or Hits, he has a better chance of "putting it together" than pitchers who do not throw hard.

Just to dig up an old thread since I was being curious...

In OOTP4 right now in my online league we have spring training coming up.

I have a lot of young pitchers, and a couple of guys in the majors who have cannons and 8 and 9s in velocity. With it being that high, if I take away all 5 points in ST and add it to something else, is it really going to make much of a difference in his ratings and performance?

Yea that's what I thought it did, because I would always try to get guys like Justin Pope who threw really hard and I hoped would go up in ratings.

I'm not sure I'd go and take away all 5, but its fairly common for me to take 2 points of guys like that if they need a boost in a particular area.

I am not absolutely sure the importance of the stat, but I will draft or pick up young lesser rated pitchers who are poor or fair in the avoiding hits department, but have good velocity, because I read an essay in one of Bill James' books, where he detailed the long term success of hard throwers in comparison to lets say a knuckle-baller.

I call it my Wild-Thing Production System.
