Play-by-Play

I know the list of features for OOTP14 includes "improved Play-by-Play commentary," but I just want to point out one thing about the PbP that's always irked me a little, in the hope that it might be improved for OOTP14.

Most in-game situations have a number of different commentary bits assigned to them (e.g. "[Player] gets an RBI single!" and "A run-scoring single for [player]!"). But there's one situation in which I always see the same commentary: if a team scores 5 or more runs in an inning, the play-by-play reads "BIG inning! [Team] scores 6 runs on 7 hits..." etc. I've had a situation in which a team scored 5 runs in three straight half-innings, and each time the commentary said "BIG inning!" I feel like there could be even just one or two different phrases thrown in for that situation. Something like "The inning is mercifully over. [Team] scores..." or "[Team] put on a show this inning. They score..."

I know I'm nitpicking here, and if you play out a lot of games, the PbP is going to become repetitive, but it's something that I've noticed and just felt like pointing out.

Regarding PbP, I understand that volunteers write and edit much of what we see when we play out games. How would one become involved in that process? There are a few things I would like to see added as well. I get frustrated when I see a ball is hit into the corner or to the wall, and then when asked if I want to send the runner from third, I am told the ball is very shallow, and yet the outfielder still has the ball. Makes no sense to me. I also would like to see a rundown.

Anyway, I would be happy to write script for OOTP14 if you folks are looking for help.

I would like SOUND PLAY B PLAY! Get Al Michaels or some great announcer to record all the scripts. That would be AWESOME!

I used to have sound files of Curt Gowdy and Mel Allen. All the files were seperate. Names as well as Play by play files. Lost them to a harddrive going down..They are in the PC game Oldtime Baseball..There was a guy that had them too I think i say him on here a while back. Any way you can have the files of those play by plays and assign them a number and them have it so when that comes up in a game it would play that file..We did that in the High Heat game. I also did it for the couple of moments in the SBS game. I got Curt calling the Homeruns.

Don't think it would be that hard..I don't remember how to set the sound eitor to be able to copy those sound files anymore. But i do still have the Oldtime Baseball game to get those files.I also think i still have that guys e-mail address if hes still there.

That would be so good to hear Curt and mel calling our games.

There should be announcers as in maybe at the beginning of each game, the pbp would be like: "Hello (team)'s fans! This is (announcer 1) along with (announcer 2) and we will bring you today's game..."

Speaking of repetitiveness, I think every player's dear old grandmother on my team died in 1 season.

This text object is set to show up in the PbP once every 500 games. I'll set it to occur once every 5000 games. That should do the trick (I hope)!

I dearly love OOTPB... it is a marvelous game.
I dearly love Markus, too
... but he is concerned... and rightly so... with the main components of the game, not the minute details like PBP variety or News variety.

I can sympathize with your comments, "if a team scores 5 or more runs in an inning, the play-by-play reads "BIG inning!

I was on the official Beta Team for 5 years or so (through OOTP10 I think, though I was asked to write new News stories for version 11 and 12), so I complained forever to him while on the Beta Team to put more variety in PBP and the News Stories... and elsewhere when needed in the game. Also in the Hard Code, that only Markus can access. Ever notice how there are very few verbs used at the end of a game? Does it still says "St. Louis DESTROYS New York 12-2" to describe EVERY rout? I gave him a list of 15-20 verbs like "routs, trounces, bombs, torches, drubs, crushes, hammers, clobbers, etc."

Could be wrong, but I don't think this has been fixed. I have bought version 13 and will buy 14 because I want to help make Markus successful, but haven't use 13 yet. I'm still on OOTP12 and didn't want to lose my 30-season archives. Version 13 skipped my last five years when I converted. I plan to use OOTP14 for my next league, which will be a new league, much, much smaller than my entirely too large 64-team Islandian Pro Alliance dynasty.

However, Markus only needs to have ONE RESULT in each category for the game to operate, so he is not concerned with repetition. Markus is satisfied if he has 2-5 responses in each category.

In OOTP6.5 there were only five stories in the Shutout News category that repeated ad nauseum. MLB might have up to 150-200 shutouts in some seasons past, so each item might come up 50 times a year. The news stories only had 5 stories in each of the categories. I volunteered for the Beta team around that time and spent endless hours trying to get 100 different stories in each category. After a year or two I managed to do that along with the help of numerous volunteers on the Beta Team and the OOTPB Forums. We managed to have 200 shutout stories and to enlarge all of the other categories, too. Now a shutout story might be used only 1-2 times a year.

So, in the overall scheme of things, variety in PBP and News is a low priority in OOTPB.

That withstanding, IT IS STILL AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL GAME!

Part of the problem is that the game doesn't keep track of the last text object it used unless you leave your computer and the game on all of the time.

I turn my computer off each night, so OOTPB begins at the same point each day in the News Categories. I especially noticed this in my end-of-the-season awards. They are the same story each year. They never change.

pstrickert is the PBP specialist, I don't know if the PBP rotates like the News Categories.

That's why I said I was nitpicking; I brought it up on the off-chance someone feels like changing it. It's not a big deal at all, and I have already pre-ordered OOTP14.

This part of the PbP is hardcoded. I just created a bug report and offered Markus several suggestions to provide more variety.

It would be nice to have this part of pbp's problem fixed.

EC if you would like to help write more stories I would be glad and honored to input them in the text DB. I love your writing style!

It's good to see that the Beta Team still has dedicated people like you and pstrickert on it. Both of you have been on it a long time. I always enjoyed working with both of you on the News and PBP.

Why don't you post a thread for News Stories on the OOTP14 Discussions Forum for any new categories that Markus creates. I'll be glad to help out with new stories. Maybe we can get some help and variety from other interested gamers.

Let me know should you do this. I'll be glad to help out.

I think it be a great idea to allow us the players to send in suggested lines to use for this... we would suggest what happens and then what for "announcer" to say for that event. I think it would cut down on repetitiveness but also allows for the uniquness and continue to grow as a game.
