Your first planned historical file..what moves do you have in mind?

I'll be tackling 3 different files right off the bat:

1. 2012-2013 Montreal Canadiens
2. 1979-1980 Montreal Canadiens
3. 1991-1992 Pittsburgh Penguins

For historical mode, I think I'll set up the Penguins file first. I know, I know probably a cheap choice as they were stacked, but what can I say..this file appeals to me. I think it has to do with the fact that my father is such a huge Penguins fan, and I remember watching documentaries as a child on the club during their cup years. Oh, and I loved their jerseys.

I plan on building my club around Mario Lemieux, Kevin Stevens, Jaromir Jagr and Mark Recchi on offense, while Murphy, Coffey and Samuelsson will be the focal points on D. Of course, Recchi was traded in a deal to acquire Tocchet that season, but I plan on changing history and keeping Recchi instead.

I'll likely dangle one of Ron Francis or Joe Mullen for help on D, as my offense will be pretty stacked. Brian Leetch and Chris Chelios will likely be my top 2 targets, but I imagine the price will be steep.

I'll likely stick with a Barrasso/Pietrangelo tandem in goal, with Young waiting on my reserve list. I'll be in the market for a better backup goalie though, should any teams inquire about Pietrangelo..which is unlikely.

Oh, and I plan on inquiring about Shayne Corson. I wonder if the Habs will take Bob Errey for him straight up? I assume no. Perhaps this will be where picks/prospects come into play.

My first historical season will be the 1965-66 NHL season. Thats the first season I can remember watching from beginning to end.

Plan on 3 expansion teams. Pittsburgh Hornets,Baltimore Clippers and San Diego Gulls. I want Pittsburgh's roster filled with ex-Red Wing players since the Hornets were the No. 1 farm team for Detroit.

It looks like I will bypass the Pittsburgh Penguins unless I move them to another city.

Though I generally don't do historical replays (I prefer working from present to future), I am sorely tempted to have the Flyers sign Curtis Joseph, as I wanted, rather than Vanbiesbrouck in 1998 and see how that plays out. Also, to see what might have happened if Lindros could have stayed healthy.

Ducks in 2001/02.

I will NEVER make that horrible, horrible trade of Teemu <-> Sykora, Shields and a 2nd Round Pick and instead plan on having the owners finally spending more money on the team.

Imagine if they had had Kariya, Fedorov AND Teemu. Holy Moses, that'd have been a 300-point line if there ever was one in the 2000's.

Maybe I would've been able to slip past the Devils in a SC series in 2003 as well, who knows...but PK would need to score a game-winning goal after being taken out cold by Stevens as well. Probably one of the greatest moments in NHL history.

Three for me

1993-94 Habs - Can I avoid the slide to nepotistic mecriocrity that the current team finds themselves in?
1992-93 Sens - I blast current management for being stupid over and over. Time to put my money where my mouth is.
1967-68 Leafs - Because I"m a masochist. And Ballard needs to be expunged from NHL history.

I think MLSE is a worse owner. At least Ballard was honest about his actions. MLSE continues to offer the fiction that they try to put a winner on the ice.

Now that's too funny - the words Ballard and Honest in the same sentence. It was one of the few words you could NEVER use to describe that man.

He was honest (and correct) when he said he could put anything onto the ice and Leafs fans would pay to watch it.

I imagine MLSE can't be happy with the new CBA since with more revenue sharing between teams that means less profits for MLSE (the salary cap was the best thing that ever happened for Leafs ownership, financially speaking).

Maybe that's a reason why the new owners canned Brian Burke when they did seeing as he wrote up a lot of the new CBA. Also, they may want to be more hands-on and run it like a business, especially compared to the previous group who were happy to give Burke and his predecessors full autonomy.

If I had to do a historical, probably take over the Blackhawks from the mid 90's before Dollar Bill gutted the team.

And now that I think about it, I would also consider 2010-2011. I think Stan done messed up his deals trying to get under the cap. I would try and go about it a different way and see what would come of it.

1982, the first year of my New Jersey Devils. Let's see if we can put some Mickey Mouse ears on Wayne Gretzky a little sooner in his career. Also may look to trade with Washington to get young dman by the name of Stevens and truly groom him into a NJ hero.

I don't see myself using the historical mode too much, but I will probably try the 2008-09 Maple Leafs and see what would happen if they didn't trade for Phil Kessel and instead dedicated to a full rebuild. Hopefully I turn the Leafs into today's Oilers.

A quick note for those planning on starting with a historical season from just a few years ago - remember that historical mode and modern mode will work differently. An example being no minor leagues in historical mode...only NHL.

So, what I'm getting at is, if you want to start in 2005-2006 and play through present day, remember that once you get to 2012-2013 and beyond, you're technically still in historical mode. So although the correct players (and obviously fictional rookies in the future) will appear in the game, you won't be able to use all he features of modern mode, even though you're technically in present day.

So, for me, historical mode makes more sense if you're planning on starting quite a few years ago, or if you only plan on going for so long. If you want to start 3 or 4 seasons ago and plan on going well into the future, it probably makes more sense to just stick with modern mode.

Or you can go with historical mode until you reach today and then make corrections to the modern day database according to what you've changed in history and continue with the modern day

True. But that sounds like a lot of work.

It does (well it depends on how far in the past you will start - changes made during one season wouldn't be too hard). But you can also be satisfied to make only those changes (in the modern database) that have direct effect on your team (e.g. your trades and contract extensions etc in your historical mode) or on your and rival team and so on.

Although generally I agree that for me the historical mode is usable only when starting at least 10-15 years ago (and probably even more).

I'm sure I'll do an expansion draft with my Predators, a current Preds, and a custom league with relegation.
