Do you get attached to players?
It might seem a little strange for someone to get 'attached' to OOTP players, but whenever I have a guy that has played with me for 8-10 season (I play out every game), regardless of talent, I have a hard time trading him away.
Maybe I'm just a weirdo, but is anyone else this way?

I am the same way. I try to trade players when they turn 30 because they usually have a big contract by then and I want to get something back for them before they start to decline. But, in a semi-fictional league that's now 60 years long, I have kept four fictional players on my team their whole careers. And all four of them have entered the Hall of Fame. It just adds to the immersive feeling to have players who played only for me or only for one team their whole careers.

All the time. I keep my favorite players shortlisted (that's why we need tabbed shortlists) so they are easy to find.
Not weird to me.

Which is an unfortunate detachment.

Yes. I just resigned a 4 win player (split half offense/defense, so... maybe not the greatest HITTER ever...) to a 5 year, 12 mil contract extension that HE suggested to me. I went and looked... very high loyalty, very low greed. I was considering trading him after signing him to the team friendliest extension ever, but... thought it would be the biggest dbag move I could ever make, and he'd feel awful, so I didn't.

Drafted a guy in one league in the 27th round, dude never really became much of an all-star but he stayed as one of my bench players for all 21 years of his career. Even as a .241 career hitter, I got really attached to him.

I usually ditch my guys after 5 to 8 years, but if I sense that a guy is bound to be a HOFer, I'll try and stick with him; when I get fired, I try to trade for him when I take a new job. I had a guy I brought up from the minors, shortly before getting fired, traded to get him at my new job, and kept him until he retired. He began as a RF, after 12 years, I moved him to 1b, because his defensive ratings went south, then a DH 4 years later. After 18 season, he retired with a .297 ba 791 hr and 2584 rbi.... He would have gone into the HOF after 5 years, except the game crashed soon after.

I get very attached to players, especially ones I draft that turn into potential HOFers. I will overpay them to keep them on my team as well, not the smartest move I know but I can't stand the thought of them in another uniform.

I generally don't get attached to my own players, because I run a small market franchise and most of these guys simply have to go when they get near Free Agency. It's a constant churn of marketing established guys for 2 or 3 decent prospects. I look at my stars and think about what they will eventually be worth in a trade. It's a fact of life with our financial situation.
But I DO get attached to players in the league. It's a Fictional League that is 9 seasons old. There is a guy named Dick Bartlett who holds the all-time single season HR record at 48. He's lost a little as he moved into his mid 30s, but he is still a major PITA. The guy always takes my pitchers deep when I play against him. Another guy who I like to check in on is a pitcher named Tony Spivey. Multiple Cy Young Awards, almost always with an ERA of 2.90 or lower. He is a strikeout machine. But he has always played for a lousy team (Denver). Until 2 years ago when he carried Denver through the playoffs and to a championship. This season he had a major injury in April and is out for 3-4 months. Denver is a much easier team to deal with without Spivey on the mound. His situation reminds me of Walter Johnson and Washington. |

I get attached to players all the time in this game. I usually have a hard time getting rid of them also, I tend to hold on to them too long.

In my online league, I got attached to my 10th round pick (last round of the draft) in our inaugural season. Tony Ramirez is a 17 year old reliever that I converted to a starter. I was just about to do a write up about his progression over the last 4 seasons (he was doing well in AA) when he gets hit with a 12 month injury! I hope he can return without a hit on his ratings!

I've only started playing OOTP this year, but I'm already experiencing this problem... Firstly with Minor Leaguers who get promoted above their talents to fill an injury crisis (of which I have a lot!), I just can't help but feel bad about busting them back down.
Secondly... Cole Hamels. He simply has not performed to his stats for the 3.5 seasons I've been playing. Due to a combination of long term injuries to my aces and free agents/trade in SPs not woking out as they should have (Why does this keep happening to me?), he's still in my rotation, still earning a fortune and I just can't bring myself to give him the bullet... Possibly for fear of what may follow. |

Mine right now is a 3B named Lucio Martinez... he's starting to wind down a bit, but Mr. Orcin found him when someone tried to sneak him through on waivers so they could stash him. He fought through scouts from everywhere saying he'd never stick... and he's STUCK and been a productive Colonel for a few great seasons now, including two World Series wins. This player isn't even in my game, but I remember that from memory. Anyone can become an "attachment" if you let your imagination run and become invested in what these players do in these universes. |

Being the GM of the Pirates with a penny pinching owner really takes away the ability to become attached to the players I draft. This is especially true for stud pitchers at the end of their arbiration eligible years.
I find that I am constantly turning over my roster for younger prospects/suspects because I won't be able to afford these superstars. Having a scout that has outstanding or legendary minor league scouting ability is essential for my ability to evaluate talent. |
