Random Chaos Boxing 2012 - Heavyweights

Notable fights - January 1900
January 1Austin, TexasWBA World title
Max Schmeling 27-0-0(23)VSPat Comiskey 19-0-0 (15)
All in attendance knew that Comiskey could match the daunting 'Black Uhlan' in the power department, but most doubted he could match Schmelings skill. Though Comiskey did hurt Schmeling several times in rounds 5-7, he began to fade and by round 10 he was taking a beating. Schmeling made a mess of Comiskey's left eye with a punishing right hand, opening a cut and causing severe swelling. Comiskey was game and stayed upright, but in the end the cut over his eye brought about the stoppage, giving Max a World Title.
Schmeling defeats Comiskey by TKO at 0:47 of round 15
January 12Newark, New JerseyNABF title
Al Kaufmann 21-1-1 (16)VSCleveland Williams 16-0-0 (15)
A highly anticipated battle between two world class contenders ended in less than enthralling fashion. Both fighters came out throwing bombs, though neither was very accurate over the first two rounds. In the third, Kaufmann landed a hard right hand, that glanced awkwardly off the top of Williams head. Kaufmann immediately turned away in pain and after a brief discussion with the ringside doctor, the fight was halted. The NABF announced that Kaufmann would be given another shot at the belt once his injury was healed.
Williams defeats Kaufmann by TKO at 0:28 of round 3
January 28Memphis, TNWBC World title
Jack Sharkey 17-0-0 (11)VSJoe Jeannette 18-0-0 (16)
The action was fast and furious early as Jeannette dropped Sharkey in the 2nd round and Sharkey returned the favor, putting Jeannette on the canvas in round number 3. The action slowed considerably after that, as both men were wary of the others power, though Jeannette was busier, building a comfortable lead through 10. Sharkey then launched a furious comeback, throwing caution to the wind, he decked Jeannette in the 12th and Joe was counted out.
Sharkey defeats Jeannette by KO at 2:58 of round 12

My old random chaos universe (random debut years) was always my favorite, so I will be doing a HW version as time permits for the fun of it.

Started in 1895 adding fighters each year to build a history. There will be 2 World title organizations (WBA and WBC) as well as three regional titles.

The regional belts are NABF (North and South America), PBC (Pacific Rim) and EBU (Europe).

Aging:
Beginning: 4-8
Pre: 6-12
Prime: 14-114
Post: 4-10
End: 2-6

Fighters will fight on the local circuit against tomato cans using the auto scheduler until they pass the 15 fight mark, then join the world circuit and be eligible for ranking and titles. I will select random debut years to add RL fighters each year and the universe will start in 1900 as indicated above. Monthly reports will have detail of title fights and notable fights, with just the results of all other world circuit fights. Quick and easy.

Real Life fighters currently active - 215
Debut years - all fighters debuting 1886 or prior, 1902-1904, 1913, 1924, 1928, 1933, 1938, 1951, 1964, 1972, 1979, 1995 and 2001.

Tomato Cans - 291

Real Life fighters will retire according to the aging parameters above, tomato cans will retire if they reach prime and have a losing record. If they have a winning record at prime, they join the world circuit and will retire based on the regular aging parameters.

Notable fights - February 1900
February 7Kansas City, MO
Jameel McCline 19-1-0 (15)VSJohn Morrisey 15-4-2 (4)
An intriguing matchup, with McCline coming back from a year long layoff and looking to climb into title contention. This one was an absolute bloodbath, with McCline suffering a cut above the left eye in round 1 and Morrisey suffering the same fate in the 3rd. The action swayed back and forth and though Morrisey looked the fresher of the two, his corners inablity to staunch the flow of crimson cost him the fight as the referee waved it off in round 7, with all 3 cards reading 3 rounds to 2, with 1 even for McCline.
McCline defeats Morrisey by TKO at 0:55 of round 7
February 19Birmingham, EnglandEBU Title
Danny Williams 20-1-0 (18)VSTom Sayers 13-2-0 (2)
Tom Sayers had a reputation as a rougn and tumble character and he more than solidified that reputation in standing up to a brutal beating from the 'Brixton bomber'. Williams took control early and Sayers left eye sported a nasty mouse from round 4 on. Though he was able to mark Williams face as well, Sayers was no match for his foe in the end and was finally sent crashing to the canvas in the final round. He climbed to his feet and gamely finished standing, but the decision was a foregone conclusion.
Williams defeats Sayers by UD in 15 round (12-3, 12-2-1, 12-2-1)

Other results - World Circuit
Ernie Cab 15-3-0 (6) KO 7 Tim Wood 17-4-0-(1)
Jovo Pudar 22-3-0 (6) UD 10 Chris Lilly 12-7-0 (5)
Morris Harris 11-5-0 (9) KO 1 Najee Shaheed 13-4-1 (7)
Damon Reed 13-3-1 (9) KO 10 Black Fitzsimmons 15-3-1 (12)
Pat Comiskey 20-1-0 (16) KO 4 Jordan Blondell 7-8-1 (3)

Just one title left to decide (The PBC belt) but with a dearth of quality fighters active in the pacific rim, it may not be contested until later in the year, with Bill Squires and Australian Billy Smith being the two most likely to meet.

In addition, NABF champion Cleveland Williams has announce he will be back in the ring in next month, battling 15-1-0 (9) Frankie Campbell with his belt on the line.

No word on a defense from either World Champion, though rumors swirl of a possible Max Schmeling / Tommy Harrison scrap in late April, with the undefeated Harrison eager to sign on the dotted line.

Notable fights - March 1900
March 10Dickson, PA
Joe Jeannette 18-1-0 (16)VSTom Hyer 14-1-1 (4)
Tom Hyer came out on fire in an attempt to vault into the top 10, swarming Joe Jeannette in taking the first 2 rounds of their 10 round tilt. In the 3rd a paralyzing right hand shook Hyer to the core and from there on out it was nearly all Jeannette. Joe took rounds 3 through 8 on all cards and split the last two rounds on two of the scorecards, using precise counter punching and a wicked uppercut that jolted Hyer on the inside. The win puts Joe back into the mix of top contenders.
Jeannette defeats Hyer by UD in 10 rounds (7-3, 8-2, 6-3-1)
March 23Pittsburgh, PANABF Title
Cleveland Wiliams © 17-0-0 (16)VSFrankie Campbell 15-1-0 (9)
An absolute war that looked like it would end in a hurry after the powerful Williams dropped Campbell early in round 1. The Big Cat could not finish though and Campbell put Williams down in the 2nd. From there both men stood toe to toe at ring center and let their hands go, with both taking wicked shots. Williams is known for lack of conditioning and by round 6 it was apparent he was gassed, tasting the canvas for a second time. On wobbly legs to start the 7th, Williams was put away by a brutal right in a mild upset.
Campbell defeats Williams by KO at 2:43 of round 7

The Williams/Campbell slugfest was absolutely electric and there is assuredly a rematch on the horizon for these two, with or without a title on the line.

Joe Jeannette was in attendance at the Maloney/Richardson fight and big Jim called him out after disptaching Charlie. Jeannette merely smiled and admonished Maloney with a wag of the finger.

Notable fights - April 1900
April 5Melbourne, AustraliaPBC Title
Bill Squires 20-3-0 (18)VSAussie Billy Smith 13-3-0 (12)
Much was expected as Australia's two finest fighters met for the first time and the bout did not disappoint. Squires was the stronger early on, but was first to the floor, courtesy of a Smith right in round 6. Squires came back with a vengence dropping Smith twice in the 7th round. Less than a minute into the 8th Smith was down again and arose bleeding badly from a wound above his left eye. Squires stormed in and battered 'Aussie' Billy, putting down for good with a thunderous right hand to claim the PBC strap.
Squires defeats Smith by KO at 2:47 of round 8
April 14Kalispel, Montana
Jameel McCline 20-1-0 (16)VSJovo Pudar 22-3-0 (6)
The awkard Pudar seemed to bother McCline in the 1st and early part of the second rounds with a clutch and punch style. With just under 30 seconds left in the 2nd stanza though, a sharp right hand from McCline dropped his rugged opponent and things quickly changed. From that point on McCline landed almost at will and after a brief comeback attempt in the 9th, Pudar was sent down again in the 10th with a violent uppercut. The decision was a mere formality as McCline will surely move up in the rankings.
McCline defeats Pudar by UD in 10 rounds (9-1, 8-2, 8-2)

Max Schmeling 28-0-0 (24)VSTommy Harrison 17-0-1 (3)
Many believed Harrison had the skills to give the champion trouble and he showed well enough early, frustrating Schmeling with a tight defense and a pesky jab, even puffing up Max's right Eye. In the 6th Schmeling finally penetrated Harrison's defense and decked him with a right near the end of the round. From there the rout was on as Max unleashed an furious attack that forced the stoppage in the 9th, with Harrison helpess in his corner.

Upcoming Fights

Danny Williams 21-1-0 (18) vs Joe Coburn 16-3-1 (3) - EBU Title

With no worthy challengers set to fight, WBC champ Jack Sharkey elects to take a non-title scrap against the journeyman Harris, while across the pond Joe Coburn will look to outfox EBU boss Danny Williams, who has been promised a shot at Sharkey's belt if he retains the European belt.

With a dearth of interesting fights among the top challengers looming, talk has already turned to a bevy of interesting prospects working their way in the local ranks, with Tommy Burns and Sam Langford still garnering most of the praise.

There has also been talk of boxing being included in the upcoming olympic games in July, though final confirmation, as well as the qualfications have not been solidified. Scribes have been told that an announcement can be expected sometime in early May regarding this possibility.

Jack Sharkey 18-0-0 (12)VSMorris Harris 11-5-0 (9)
WBC boss Jack Sharkey started fast in this non-title affair battering Harris early and often in the opening stanza. Sharkey then slowed the pace over the next two rounds, apparently looking to get work in, but was caught at the end the 3rd and briefly stunned. Jack turned up the heat again in the 4th and swarmed Harris, rocking him with short hooks and long, looping rights. An especially brutal exchange near the end of the 4th had Harris on the ropes and helpless, bring the stoppage with just a second left to the bell.

Danny Williams 21-1-0 (18) © VSJoe Coburn 16-3-1 (3)
Williams came out throwing bombs in his first defense of the European Title and caught Coburn in the 3rd, dropping the Irishman as the bell rang. Coburn fought gamely and stood toe to toe with the champion, but lacked the power to hurt Williams and was fading badly by the 12th as Williams continued to build a lead in the eyes of most at ringside. Coburn remained upright on pluck alone and left his own marks on Williams, but as the fight ended the challenger was bleeding profusely and exhausted, with Williams the clear winner.

Olympics to include Boxing, but not until 1904

The two world governing bodies of boxing, the WBA and WBC have announced their approval to include boxing as an Olympic sport. The final plan, which would see 8 countries represented every 4 years will not be implemented until 1904 however.

Both organizations have indicated that Boxing does not have enough quality fighters at the world class level to have 8 countries represented by quality fighters in next months games. Under the agreement the top ranked boxer in each of eight different countries would qualify. If the tournament were to be held this year it would include Max Schmeling, Jack Sharkey, Danny Williams, Bill Squires, Jovo Pudar, Joe Coburn, Timo Ahola and Angelo Visini.

While the first four make for some interesting fights, the dropoff begins with Pudar and fails dramatically with Ahola and Visini. The latter two would represent Finland and Italy respectively, but are also ranked 51st and 85th in the world. With the boxings booming popularity at the regional level and a horde of good fighters set to move up to the world class ranks over the next 2-3 years, competitve dropoff, as well as number of countries represented at the sports highest level should not be a problem.

June 4St. Charles, MO
Joe Jeannette 19-1-0 (16)VSJim Maloney 16-1-0 (12)
Billed as a battle between two top contenders, this ended up being a one sided romp that exposed Maloney as only a pretender. Jeannette showed supperior speed, strength and power, keeping Maloney at the end of his punches all night and doing horrific damage to his face. In the 7th Maloney met the canvas after a straight right nearly tore his head off, but he gamely fought on. Late the in last round, bleeding and peering through swollen eyes, Maloney went down again courtesy of a hook and this time remained prone.
Jeannette defeats Maloney by KO at 2:39 of round 10

John Morrisey 15-5-2 (4)VSBlack Fitzsimmons 15-3-1 (12)
Neither of these scrappy gentlemen will ever win a world title, but they did put on an entertaining pier sixer for the fans in Cleveland, going back and forth in a crude, but exciting brawl. Fitzsimmons drew first blood, cutting 'Ol Smoke above his right eye in the 4th, but Morrisey responded with a wild hook in the 7th that dropped Fitzsimmons. The 8th saw the crimson begin to flow again from Morrisey's wound and Fitz attacked it, forcing the stoppage with Morrisey ahead on all three cards.

Frankie Campbell 16-1-0 (10) © vs Larry Frazier 17-3-0 (14) - NABF Title

After a relatively dull month, July brings us two title bouts as Schmeling looks for his 30th straight win against the power punching PBC champ, who has not lost since May of 1896 and has knocked out his last 15 opponents. Schmeling is a solid favorites, but Squires has the big right hand and is capable. Odds are this one will not go the the distance.

Look for Pat Comiskey, winner of three straight since a failed bid for the WBA belt against Schmeling to get next crack at Sharkey's WBC prize, with Danny Williams also under consideration.

Larry Frazier has made a move and is said to be looking at Frankie Campbells NABF Title as an opportunity to vault into the top 5 and garner a world title shot late this year or early 1901.

July 9Hamburg, GermanyWBA World Title
Max Schmeling 29-0-0 (25) © VSBill Squires 21-3-0 (19)
Defending his world title in front of his countrymen for the first time, Schmeling looked focused and ready, though the superior power of Squires was not to be discounted. The first round started slowly, with Squires looking to land a bomb and Schmeling boxing smartly. In the second Squires began to push the action more, but Max timed one his rushed perfectly and landed an uppercut that dropped the Aussie on his back. Squires barelt moved as Schmeling took his 30th straight win, while barely breakling a sweat.

Frankie Campbell 16-1-0 (10) ©VSLarry Frazier 17-3-0 (14)
Many thought Frazier to be the better fighter and predicted a quick end to Campbell's title run, but when the robes came off, it was clear who had trained to win. Campbell looked chiseled and ready, while Frazier was overweight and soft around the middle and when the bell rang the speed of Campbell carried the day. Beaten to the punch again and again, Frazier plodded slowly after the champ, landing in spurts, but never hurting Campbell and more often than not wrestling him. Frazier was spent after 6 rounds and Campbell coasted.

Two dominating performances by Champions and the successful return of Al Kaufman from a hand injury highlight the action in July and if Jack Sharkey can beat EBU belt holder Danny Williams next month, the clamor for a unification bout between Schmeling and Sharkey will undoubtedly begin.

Cleveland Williams 17-1-0 (16)VSTom Sayers 14-3-0 (2)
An intriguing fight that saw the fighters battle on even terms through the early rounds, with Sayers doing a good job of avoiding Williams power. The Big Cat looked to tire mid fight, but found his second wind and went on a tear in rounds six through nine, rattling Sayers, but never putting him down. Sayers let it all go in the 10th, but could not muster the power to dent Williams chin. As the final bell rang Sayers had his moments, but looked worse for the wear, as Williams strong charge in the middle rounds carried the day.

Jack Sharkey 19-0-0 (13) ©VSDanny Williams 22-1-0 (18)
Things started at a frenetic pace as the EBU champ came in determined to wrest the world title from Sharkey, who came right back at the challenger. Round 2 may have been round of year with 3 minutes of non-stop action. Sharkey did well weathering Williams rushes, but got caught in round 6 and dropped with a right hand, barely surviving the canto. The next 6 rounds saw more scintillating action, that often got rough on the inside and it was this that led to Williams downfall in an anti-climatic ending.

With not a lot to salivate over in September in terms of intriguing fights, the fans will have plenty of time to rehash the Sharkey / Williams World Title tilt.

It is likely these discussions will be evenly split over Sharkey's poor judgement in standing toe to toe with the hard punching Brit and William's lack of composure in snatching defeat away from the jaws of victory by being drawn into Sharkey's "down by the docks" style of fighting. William's led convincely when he was disqualified (5-7, 4-8 and 3-9) and there was no way short of a KO (or DQ) that Sharkey could have retained his belt. One thing those on both sides of the argument can agree on.....This would be a helluva rematch for December.

Pat Comiskey 22-1-0 (18)VSTommy Harrison 17-1-1 (3)
With both men having failed in one attempt to win a world title it was apparent that this would be a true crossroads fight, as a second loss, combined with up and coming talent would relegate the loser to second tier contender status. With so much at stake, Harrison fought as though his very career was on the line, beating Comiskey to the punch and nullifying the latters power with aggression. Comiskey was cut over the right eye in round 3 and Harrison put his jab to work, attacking the wound and finally forcing the stoppage.
Harrison defeats Comiskey by TKO at 2:31 of round 6 (Cuts)
September 30Salem, North Carolina
Jameel McCline 21-2-0 (16)VSErnie Cab 16-3-0 (7)
McCline had been climbing in the rankings until a devastating loss to Stacy Frazier in June derailed him. Cab presented a tough foe, that figured to test McCline and he did more than that early, outslugging Jameel over the first 3 rounds. From round 4 on however, McCline seemed to develop an interest in the fight and also discovered his jab, which made the difference the rest of the night. It was a far from stellar performance, but it was decisive and got Jameel back on track.
McCline defeats Cab by UD in 10 rounds (8-2, 8-2, 7-3)

With a unification fight between Sharkey and Schmeling nowhere close to happening, fans get the next best thing as the WBA's #2 contender will square off against the unbeaten Champ. Jeannette, whose only loss is to Sharkey, will be Schmelings toughest test to date and if Joe wins it will undoubtedly destroy any chance for an WBA/WBC unified Champion for at least a year. Sharkey has already stated he will not fight again this year and has mentioned looking to new challenges in 1901 if Schmeling is no longer the WBA belt holder.

The current dearth of world class fighters in the EBU and PBC continues to be disheartening, but help is on the way as several highly regarder European fighters will join the World ranks in January. EBU Champion Danny Williams has already indicated his next defense will be in January against highly regarded local fighter Yankee Sullivan, though most doubt the unbeaten Irishman is ready.

Joe Jeannette has now moved up to #2 in both world rankings and hopes to have better fortune next month against WBA king Max Schmeling, though most feel the 'The Black Uhlan' is a better fighter than Jack Sharkey and will dispatch Jeannette.

Notable fights - October 1900
October 12Hollywood, California
Al Kaufman 22-2-1 (17)VSBlack Fitzsimmons 16-3-1 (13)
Al Kaufmann's second fight back after breaking his wrist in his NABF title loss to Cleveland Williams featured a step up in competition against Fitzsimmons, who many thought would present a stiff challenge. Kaufmann came out fast in round one and kept Fitzsimmons on his heels throughout the stanza, with the latter landing an occasional counter. Round 2 started with a clinch at ring center, then a powerful overhand right put Fitzsimmons down. As Fitz arose, Kaufmann pounced, landing a brutal left / right that put him to sleep.
Kaufmann defeats Fitzsimmons by KO at 1:58 of round 2
October 24Memphis, TennesseeWBA World Title
Max Schmeling 30-0-0 (26) ©VSJoe Jeannette 20-1-0 (17)
A very even fight early, with the fighters splitting the first 4 rounds, all of which were close. In round 5 Schmeling was clearly the better man and parlayed that advantage into a 6th round knockdown. Jeannette rallied in the 8th and 9th, then put the champion down for a flash knockdown in the 11th, making it anyones fight with 4 rounds to go. After 2 close rounds, Jeannette carried the 14th and looked to have pulled ahead with one to go. The 15th was the swing round and both men went full bore, leaving it to the judges.
Schmeling defeats Jeannette by SD in 15 rounds (7-8, 8-7, 8-6-1)

Upcoming Fights of note
Danny Williams 22-2-0 (18) vs Tim Wood 18-4-0 (1) - EBU Title
Bill Squires 21-4-0 (19) vs Tom Hyer 15-2-1 (4)

Two contenders coming off failed World Title shots look to get back on track as Danny Williams will be a prohibitive favorite to retain his EBU title as Tim Wood as lost 2 of his last 3 and seems to have hit his ceiling as a mid level fighter, despite his respectable record. Squires will be in for a much tougher test against the crafty Hyer, though is power should tilt the scales in his favor.

Though luck Joe Jeannette lost his 2nd bid for World glory and may be seeing his window of opportunity closing, despite two very strong showings against both champs. If he is to get another shot he will need to battle through the highly touted batch of newcomers entering the World ranks in January, but he should not be counted out.

Notable fights - November 1900
November 2London, EnglandEBU Title
Danny Williams 22-2-0 (18) ©VSTim Wood 18-4-0 (1)
Tim Wood was ranked 64th in the world coming in and given little chance to unseat Williams. Somebody forgot to tell him that, as Wood opened a huge gash under Williams right Eye in round 1 and then proceeded to race to a big lead winning the first 5 stanzas on each card. Williams rallied in rounds 6-8, but it was apparent after 8 that he had not trained hard, as he looked slow and incapable of hurting Wood. The challenger weathered the brief storm and regained control from the 9th on scoring the big upset and a title belt!
Wood defeats Williams by UD in 15 rounds (10-4-1, 12-2-1, 10-4-1)
November 9Miami, Florida
Bill Squires 21-4-0 (19)VSTom Hyer 15-2-1 (4)
The power of 'Boshter Bill' was on display early in this wild donnybrook as Hyer's face was swelling by round 3. Undaunted Hyer fought back and staggered Squires in the 4th in one of several furious exchanges at ring center. Squires continued to land the harder blows, but Hyer stayed up and had Squires bleeding by round 8. Despite fatigue being felt by both men, the final two rounds were still fought at a furious pace, that brought a standing ovation at the final bell, with both warriors a mess in a well fought battle.
Squires defeats Hyer by UD in 10 rounds (6-4, 6-4, 8-2)

Cleveland Williams 18-1-0 (16) vs Jovo Pudar 24-4-0 (6)
Frankie Campbell 17-1-0 (10) © vs Tommy Harrison 18-1-1 (4) - NABF Title

The year winds down next month with an NABF scrap that promises to be a beauty and Cleveland Williams hoping to impress enough to land a World Title shot early in 1901.

The EBU fight is easily the upset of the year and a testament to what determinatiuon can do and what lack of training can do to you. Williams was clearly out of shape and he all but sabotaged himself as a serious contender withthe influx of talent joining the world ranks next year. Though he will always be a dangerous fighter, Williams looks to be sliding to the role of gatekeeper. A match between him and one of the upcoming young Lions such as Burns, Langford or Mormeck next year could solidify this role or vault him back into the top 10 for one last shot at world laurels.

Notable fights - December 1900
December 5New Britain, Connecticut
Cleveland Williams 18-1-0 (16)VSJovo Pudar 24-4-0 (6)
Cleveland Williams looked in better shape than at any point in his entire career and Pudar tested him early, starting quick and then going on an all out assault in the 4th, that previously may have worn Williams down. Tonight though, the Big Cat responded by dropping Pudar in the 5th with a short right hand that took the fight out of him. Content to merely survive from that point on, Pudar fought from a shell as Williams stalked him, sweeping every round from the 5th on, staying under control and looking fairly fresh at the end.
Williams defeats Pudar by UD in 10 rounds (8-2, 8-2, 8-2)
December 23Atlanta, GeorgiaNABF Title
Frankie Campbell 17-1-0 (10) ©VSTommy Harrison 18-1-1 (4)
This on had the makings of an evenly matched battle, with only Campbell's power providing any measurable favor. The Champ started fast and Harrison showed the fights first marks with swelling around the right eye in the 3rd. A strong 4th got Harrison back in it and saw Campbell sustain a cut over his right eye. Harrison was spurred on by the sight of blood and attacked the cut with a vengence, opening it again early in the 5th round which brought the referee in and after quick examination it was called due to the bleeding!!
Harrison defeats Campbell by TKO at 0:42 of round 5 (Cut)

Sam Langford 15-0-0 (14) vs Courage Tshabala 14-1-0 (11)
Jeff Simms 15-0-0 (12) vs Larry Frazier 17-4-0 (14)

With many hoping Sharkey would make this defense against the exciting young Canadian Sam Langford, Jack instead opted for Al Kaufmann, indicating he did not know anything about Langford, aside from the steamer crates full of crap coming from north of the border. Sharkey went on to explain that Kaufmann had earned his shot, while Langford had much to prove.

Well, with the world now eager to see if the hoopla is true, Langford will fight the promising South African Courage Tshabala, in a showcase bout for both men, while the promising young American Jeff Sims debuts on the worls stage against rugged Larry Frazier. The cranks are abuzz with hope that 1901 will be the finest year in boxing ever!!

The European boxing community has been especially bouyed by the influx of new blood on the world scene. This area was known as the premier Pugilism region in world during the zenith of Bare Knuckle fighting, only to be driven to the brink of extinction after the tragic Moorshead riots of the 1889. Now with the modern gloved rules in place the European countries are again churning out fighters eager to stake their claim to fame in the squared circle.

In America boxing has taken the nation by storm as the ring is one of very few places a man can compete on equal terms for equal pay regardless of his social or ethnic background and America's neighbors to the north have rallied behind their new fighting heros as Tommy Burns and Sam Langford look to the put Canada on the map.

1901 will indeed be an exciting year and with more and more able bodied athletes partaking of the sweet science each year, the future continues to shine brightly.

As the quarterly rankings reflect, the hoped for push by European fighters has not ocurred as the top hopeful coming in, Yankee Sullivan has lost 2 straight and plummeted in the Euro Rankings, with only Jem Mace cracking the WBC rankings on the world scene. Mace will likely not receive a title shot anytime soon as his style is deplored by most and with Bill Squires packing a punch but not much else, the only real elite fighter outside of North America is WBA Champion Max Schmeling.

Sam Langford's management has indicated they would like a shot at Jack Sharkey if Langford can defeat another top 10 fighter by years end, while talk of a unification fight between Schmeling and Sharkey has surfaced, but it appears neither side is in a hurry to set this one up.
