Hawk Harrelson, and discussion of league commentary

I think the White Sox should just use a soundboard of his phrases to call games. Unless that's what they've already been doing?

Its so ridiculous. Why does he have to say "yes" twice?

Sometimes I'm my wife and I listen to their broadcast just to make fun of it. But when I'm watching the game recaps on mlb.tv it sometimes catches me off guard. You have to be in the mood. Like a bad B movie...

Mlb.tv is kinda cool how it allows you to sample the different commentators around the league. I find it interesting the Dodgers have only 1 guy. Is that a normal thing for them or is there some backstory behind it and is it just for this year?

Some of them are really boring. Their voices just don't spark enthusiasm. I think maybe the Reds guys?

I like the Tiger's combo and the A's are pretty good. I find myself wondering if I was following a team that had a crap broadcasting team would I be able to hack it?

For my team, Mike Blowers and Dave Sims aren't the best but at least they seem down to earth and they work well together. And I dig Dave's hats. We were blessed for so long with Dave Niehaus. How often to teams replace their commentary team members? Is it pretty much until they decide to leave or pass away?

It seems like a pretty important position for team revenue and generating/keeping fans. But maybe it just doesn't have that big of an effect or its un-evaluatable.

I wish Hawk would get into pro wrestling or something and quit the Sox.

I'm more interested in how you get to be your wife. Is it some sort of Vulcan mind meld?

Haha, what a crazy typing error.

I think you're right Chase. I wonder if I started it.

While I do love his catch phrases, "He Gone", You Can Put.." , "This ballgame is Ova" I consider him only one notch above Harry Caray (Cubs era) as the worst announcer is baseball. I am waiting for the day that he retires and let's DJ take over with Steve Stone. I am tired of every game having to hear about Ted Williams, Yaz and his golf game.

Try listening to the self-important blowhard John Sterling for a few games if you need a mental re-set to be able to stand the Hawk again.

Harrelson has, of late, been saying, "It's all good" when...uh...something good happens. He is a catchphrase machine.

I think he's just a robot with a soundboard installed in his throat. His partner has a little touch pad and just selects stuff at the appropriate time.

Hawk is horrible. By far the worst announcer I have heard in my life. That includes Carey. I'm in the Chicago broadcasting area and sometimes mlb.tv blacksout the Tigers when they play the Sox and in order to watch them I have to watch the Chicago station with Hawk announcing. He comes across as simple, annoying and not too bright. The phrases The Game likes so much are the one that make me think that. He is very painful to listen to (especially compared to the Tigers guys who, though I'm sure I'm bias, are one of the better pairs in the game) and he gets so many things wrong. He'll make statements about Tigers players that are flat out wrong (whereas other announcers I have heard, even if they are rival teams like the Twins, get those facts totally correct). I can't believe the Sox fans haven't asked for his head.

I know most Tiger fans like him, but I can't stand Rod Allen. If I purchased the Extra Innings package, I would have to listen to other teams broadcasts. Not a fan of Jim Price on the radio either.

I so miss Ernie & Paul and George and Al.

Oh and that one man Dodger's booth is music to the ears when that one man is Vin Scully. What a gem.

Hawk is hardly universally loved among Sox fans, but there's kind of the feeling that, "yeah, he's a terrible announcer, but he's our terrible announcer."

I'm trying to think of some of the other announcers I've listened to through mlb.tv (I have to fake my IP to watch since I'm in the Detroit blackout zone and sometimes the video freaks out and I have to watch the other team's coverage). Pittsburgh and Cincinnati I think have good announcers. Maybe St. Louis too. I'm not too fond of the guys in Boston, but I love their accents.

I like announcers who compliment the other side's team and players, who are not so one sided (saying things like, "The Good Guys and The Bad Guys") that they can actually just enjoy the game of baseball and the players who play the game rather than simply being about winning and looking good.

Its true, but it is also kinda weird during the slow moments. He has nobody to "discuss" things with. He is left just reading off stats and reporting tidbits about the team and players. While it sounds nice...it kinda starts to sound like a canned narrative.

Scully's narrative is far more interesting than hearing two buffoons (pick your team) drop names of fans who send them cookies or some other inane interplay.

I love the entrie Mets broadcasting team. Cohen, Darling and Hernandez are all great. On the occasion I listen to a Yankees game to root against them () I always wonder how Yankees fans can stand John Sterling or Michael Kay.

I agree about the Mets broadcasting team. I'm not a Mets fan but I do watch them on MLB.tv just because of the broadcasters. Another pair I love to listen to: Gary Thorne and Jim Palmer (the Orioles team). Palmer's got a subtle sense of humor. And he comes prepared. Thorne just has a classic broadcaster's voice.

Oh I checked out a Pirates game last night and I enjoyed their team as well.

They were amusing without being annoying and well prepared as well as down to earth.
