Ichiro to the Yankees
YES! I think he'll do better on the Yankees at this point in his career. Loved watching him and being proud of having him on our team all these years. I am so amazed this deal happened, but its awesome. I don't even care who we got really. Maybe they'll pan out. But now our younger guys can get more time and a new era can finally come to the M's. Ichiro can have a chance to go out with a bang.
The Mariners need veteran "leaders". Ichiro was never a leader, just a very highly skilled and awesome player. This is perfect and I totally wasn't expecting it. I'll never forget the 116 win season where he was the MVP. I'm still floored because so many cogs had to fall in place to make this happen. Will love seeing Casper Wells in RF with his power...and opening up CF and LF for Saunders, Franklin Guiterrez (if he gets healthy), Trayvon Robinson, Peguero, and even Figgins. This is like a fresh clean start for this team now. And Felix is still a few years under 30. Great deal. Love when the Yankees and M's deal. |

Here's that over-rated player. Before he was old...not over-rated at all. He played in Safeco...where A-Rod and Griffey fled from. Learn baseball.

So you think the Mariners will give Wells a shot at playing everyday? Picked him up in my AL only fantasy league and have been pleasantly surprised.

Him and Saunders are probably the catalysts of this deal happening. Wells is on fire without any protection in the line up because Smoak is still a flop this year. Wells is a natural RF and has been stuck in LF until now.

Oh, and back to the original topic...over-rated players are often know for getting too much media attention in Seattle across all sports. I see where you would get that idea r.d.

Baseball Video Highlights & Clips | Ichiro says farewell to Seattle after trade to Yanks - Video | Mariners.com: Multimedia
This is his farewell speech. I didn't listen at first until I got about 2/3 of the way through and realized they actually did translate the whole thing. Wish he could have just said some of it himself after 11 years. But it is still genuine. Please listen to the translation if you don't speak Japanese.

What's the hype with this guy? His last two seasons have been terrible. Low OBP and SLG. Age has caught up with him. Maybe he will do better having the New York power hitters batting after him.

Yeah, talk about pooping on a parade!

We need somebody besides Jeter who knows how to play the game properly and not just swing for the fences like Cano did with Teixeira on 2nd with no outs in the 12th inning of a tight ball game, the final one with the A's over the weekend. The Yanks needed some SMALL BALL at that point. It probably was too much to ask Mr. Cano to bunt, but could he not have tried to hit the ball to the right side to get Tex to third? He could have scored easily from there on a SF. But no. Cano was swinging for the fences as usual (which, when he connects, is wonderful to see) and he flied out to center. Two pop-ups later, Tex is on 2nd still. Then the A's single, sacrifice bunt, single, game over and they sweep the Yankees. I've been watching the Yankees all season and yes, they score many runs with the long ball. But I don't see the spark and smarts needed to win when the homers dry up; not since Gardner went down for the season. And Ichiro's still better in the outfield than Ibanez or Jones. So I'll take Ichiro with many thanks, age 38 or no. By the way, I just caught the video of him deeply bowing to the corners of Safeco Field, acknowledging the crowd's sendoff ovation even though he was in a Yankees uniform for the first time. Classy fans and act. By the way again, this is what I was talking about and what I am looking forward to. It almost produced a run without somebody hitting a home run, a Yankees rarity! New York - Top of 3rd Kevin Millwood pitching for Seattle Jones struck out swinging. Suzuki singled to center. Suzuki stole second. Martin grounded out to second, I Suzuki to third. Jeter grounded out to second. Last edited by 1998 Yankees; 07-24-2012 at 10:50 AM. |

Yankees needed a stopgap while Gardner is healing and Mariners needed to let him go. Sounds like a win-win to me. Yankees can platoon him in left with A. Jones, getting a defensive upgrade from Ibanez while lowering expectations on him.

Plus, I never/barely heard of the guys they gave up for him: reliever D.J. Mitchell and minor league right-hander Danny Farquhar. I should probably follow the Yankees affiliates more closely, I suppose.

Remember the Ichi-meter chick? She even went to Japan this year to hold that sign.

Ichiro does a lot of things well to make up for his low OBP. I think he will fit in nicely on the Yankees and he adds a different dimension to their all or nothing style of hitting.
I think they should bat Ichiro 2nd and move Grandy into the 6th spot personally. Never really understood why you have one of the best power hitters in the league batting 2nd. SS Jeter RF Ichiro 2b Cano 3b Arod 1b Tex cf Grandy lf Swisher dh Ibanez/Jones C Martin Arod is only batting 4th because I know Girardi wont move him. Hed be better suited for the 6th spot.
