Vesting Options based on Plate Appearances

Hi

I have a fictional league in which one player is consuming almost a third of my payroll:



I've been desperately trying to offload him all through 2012, but to no avail.

Then I noticed this vesting option, and coincidentally, he had 548 ABs in 2012. Does that mean that I should be able to cancel his contract for 2013, and if so, how do I do it?
Or am I misunderstanding plate appearances?

Alternatively, does it mean that if he doesn't make 550 plate appearances in 2013, I get the money back in some way? I doubt it somehow....

That should mean that the $21,000,000 option dies and he goes to free agency. A vesting option based on PA basically means that you agree that if the player hits X number of PA's, the option year kicks in.

I think in RL it's normally used for players with a history of injury problems.

I see it as protection when I sign an older player.

PA includes ABs plus BB not just the ABs. So your player actually had more than 550 PA. If he did not reach the vesting option you would have received mail stating that the player did not reach the required PA and was going to be a FA. It appears you are stuck with this player and his $21M salary for the 2013 season.

Look on the Trading Block for another high priced vet who might have a less expensive contract and expires that year. See if you can make a trade to get rid of him that way.

Ah, thanks guys. I forgot to mention that I'd simmed to the Free Agency Filing date and he hadn't dropped off. I hadn't counted on the BBs so that makes sense now.

Disaster.

EDIT: Got trading set to Hard so can't offload him. I didn't actually manage to make a trade at all during the 2012 season (first time trying on Hard) so I'm relying on free agents in this game basically.

In the future if you want to offload a player like that, you may want to sit him towards the end of the year so he can't reach the threshold. Just a thought
