When you are playing out a game, the box score in the upper left corner has a number listed as LP.

Last Pitch speed? Is that what this is?

Figured it out as I was typing the question!

Unrelated follow-up: any theories on why my in-game "ball trajectories" are so kooky? They seem to have little to do with the baseball field or reality at times.

You need to have your ballpark coordinates set up for each field. If you've downloaded and installed ballparks, then this is the likely cause. You need to have proper coordinates set up for each park. The default coordinates are all designed for the default ballpark backdrop that comes with the game.
