Some changes I'd like to see
1. Have a dropdown menu, either on the global setup page or the financials page under the league setup menu that allows a user to choose a different currency than the US dollar. It doesn't really make much sense to have a league in Japan or Europe using the dollar as its currency.
2. There should be some way to block certain players from being proposed to the user in trades. It's rather annoying having the same 37-year old middle reliever being proposed to you over and over. 3. Spring training -- I'm sure I'm repeating what has already been said many times before, but I'll just add my two cents: spring training opponents should be randomized, so that my team isn't just playing opponents from my league exclusively, and there should be an option to schedule spring training in some place warm -- you know, Arizona or Florida rather than Chicago or Minneapolis. 4. There should be a way to set the default start times for pre-season and post-season games. Right now, almost all post-season games are set to start at 7:05 p.m., which isn't appropriate for time periods prior to the 1980s. 5. The game-ending extra-base hit problem needs to be solved. 6. I'd like to be able to see the standings on any given day during the season. So, for instance, if I want to see what the standings were on July 20, right now I have to calculate every single team's won-lost record to recreate the standings. Instead, on the game schedule screen, there should be a button that says "See Standings" or something like that, so that I can see what the standings were on that date. 7. The post-season rotation problem for leagues where the typical starting rotation size is lower than four needs to be addressed. 8. OOTP doesn't follow the major league rule on determining the batting champion. Rule 10.23 says: However, if there is any player with fewer than the required number of plate appearances whose average would be the highest, if he were charged with the required number of plate appearances or official at bats, then that player shall be awarded the batting championship or slugging championship. 9. In leagues that progress from a short schedule to a long schedule, like major league baseball between 1876 to 1900, which went from 70 games to 154 games, OOTP calculates batting and pitching leaders according to the minimums necessary to qualify under the longer schedule. So, for instance, a batter who qualifies for the batting championship in a seventy-game schedule won't be considered one of the career single-season leaders if the league later adopts a longer schedule under which he wouldn't have enough plate appearances to qualify for the championship. In other words, the guy who hit .400 in 1876 wouldn't be among the all-time leaders in 1900 (I've submitted a ticket on this problem -- could be addressed in version 13). 10. As far as I know (this might have been resolved), in a single league that doesn't have playoffs, there's no way to resolve a first-place tie. Under major league rules, however, that type of tie-breaker isn't a playoff*, it's a continuation of the regular season, and the statistics in those tie-breaker games are included in regular season stats. So even if a single league doesn't have playoffs, it should still have tie-breakers. *EDIT: well, actually, it is a playoff, it's just not considered part of the post-season. That's what I meant to say.

Along with Spring training, I would like to see some split squad game options.
Although there is no choice for spring facilities, the game seems to be much better about spring training injuries than other versions. Teams were heading South for training at least as early as the 1890's. Baseball, the Early Years talk about how the RR in the South was not fully rebuilt yet and some teams were still going to Florida by boat for ST. An easy way to get indies working without inflating talent would help with ST. You could schedule exhibition games with say the SA in the 1890's. |

I don't think those are necessary. Just get the number of spring training games up to more realistic amounts and that should be enough. While OOTP limits the spring training season to 24 games, real life clubs currently play about 32 games (not counting split-squad games).

To take it a step further, user-definable settings for qualifying for the batting title would be nice. "Imaginary hitless at-bats" to reach the minimum at-bats were introduced and then dropped from MLB in the 1950s, before coming back into use later. And apparently, according to a 1955 Baseball Digest article ("Five Batting Titles Clouded"), prior to 1950, there was no official ruling or recommendation for awarding the batting title -- 100 games played was an unofficial rule of thumb, resulting in players with as little as 309 ABs (Ernie Lombardi, NL, 1942) winning the batting title. So the batting title requirements encoded into OOTP only match MLB rules that were in effect from 1957 (advent of 3.1 plate appearances/game rule) until 1967 (re-introduction of imaginary hitless at-bats for players falling short of the 3.1 PA/AB). This is my biggest pet peeve, so that means the game must be in pretty good shape. |

Thanks, Porb.
Funny thing is, I don't think the "imaginary hitless at-bats" rule has ever been invoked in MLB, but in my dynasty I think I've run into that situation three or four times already. |

Another change that is needed:
11. Fix the team history reports so that ties are recognized. Right now, if two teams finish the season tied for, say, third place, in the team histories one will be listed as finishing third and one will be listed as finishing fourth, despite the fact that they both finished with identical records. They should both be listed as finishing third. The game can handle ties in the single-season and career leaders reports, so why can't it handle ties in the team history reports? |
