Crashin like crazy
Wow- I love the changes but since the new version came out, my game crashes an insane amount. If I don't save after every game or trade, I lose something important. Anyone else seeing this, and what to do other than become a compulsive "saver"? I got more saves than Mariano Rivera!

I haven't had many crashes, if any, since I installed the update.
Make sure you're not running a bunch of apps in the background--I do find that some apps become unstable if the memory gets fragmented and several apps are running at the same time. Re-boot and run iOOTP on its own, just to check--it may help reduce or eliminate crashes. |

I have the same issue. Even if there's nothing else opened. I still get random crashes. And the screen seems to invert at random times even if i have the screen lock on. Weird.

iPad or iPad 2?
iOS 4 or iOS 5? I'm on an original iPad running iOS 5, seems stable enough with no crashing or random orientation flipping. That's no comfort for you, of course. |

The game should run pretty stable on an iPad 1 (I have one myself) if you follow just some guidelines: as posted, make sure to run only iOOTP and reboot from time to time to free memory (as iOOTP is pretty heavy on memory usage and the iPad 1 has just 256MB).

Ok, after playing around with it, iPad 1 with iOS 5, it still crashes with everything else off. And rebooting it is a bit of a wonky workaround but it definitely does help.
I did identify the inversion issue. I play this with the iPad flat on a desk often and it may just be a sensitivity issue. Just tapping the corner of the screen will cause the app to flip over. I also noticed that the screen lock just doesn't seem to work on this game. I boot up the game and flip the iPad and the game flips with it. This is good, a big improvement over the previous non-HD version. But when I set the screen lock (and I am setting the screen lock, not the mute), the screen lock icon will flash up on the screen, but when i flip over the iPad, the iOOTP screen will flip over as well. Can someone else test this? I don't see this behavior with other landscape apps. Just this one. Thanks all. |

I love the game, but as a software engineer, I know that a work around is not a final solution to a memory leak. I still love playing it, just that fixing the leak would improve a lot of people's gaming experience. It would also fix the crashing issue due to memory problems for most people (theres always going to be that one idiot...usually me....whos got 47 other apps running at the same time as well as iOOTP). Just looking at the reviews in the app store, almost everyone who gives it a negative review does so because it crashes on them. At the very least you could clear all the inactive/active memory for us. Most of the time I use another program to do this whenever iOOTP starts to slow down. What is interesting is that when I return to iOOTP, for about a second it shows the last screen that I was on before reinitializing the entire app since I cleared the memory. To me it says that whatever code you got disposing resources is extremely slow. I know there is a lot to do, but I've tried this exact same thing with Football Manager (I assume we agree it is comparable in size) and I do not experience the same problems...which means it is solveable. Also, I noticed that you guys are "Building the list" of players EVERY time I look at all the players in the league. Is it really necessary? Honestly it seems to start slowing down once building the list of players is executed a few times. To me the thing that slows it down is when it generates the new players. I suggest rethinking the storage because it shouldn't take too long to dump a list of players to the screen. However I do understand that the Star Ratings are calculated values (as they should be), and if that is causing the "Build the List" thing then I understand. I understand that from a business stand point it's not going to see much of a return on the time it will take to find/fix it. But the value gained from fixing the issue would be in an increase in "Fan Loyalty" which in turn will increase your "Market Size". We all know what happens when those increase...bigger budget!

I'm on an iPad 1 and iOS5. Close everything in the background.
I'd say that the game crashes constantly. I've only had the game for a few days. But it is difficult to get through 40 games without a crash. I'd say that my first season, it crashed 10+ times. I feel like I've seen every possible iteration of the Dodgers 2011 season. |

Yes, I just experience the same issue with screen lock. It is locked with rotation from landscape to vertical but not landscape to landscape. It rotates at 180 even when lock is on.

Just throwing an idea out there - could the increased crashing be a result of the new iOS5 or is the suggestion baseless?
My device is an iTouch 4th generation running iOS 4.3.5 (8L1) and I haven't see a huge uptick in saves. Then again, I've been busy and haven't had a lot of time to play iOOTP. I also have the latest 1.2.1 iOOTP version. Supernovae |

Version 1.2.1 did not change anything that could explain crashes so my guess is that iOS5 makes trouble. I will investigate it (I don't have iOS5 installed on any device as development was done before they released it) and hopefully find a solution.

For the screen lock: I will report it to our Framework guy (Paul) as he has to fix it.

I pulled up an old file on my game where I had played 30 seasons of the Astros. It was crash-tastic. I tried closing all the other apps and rebooting the iPad. It was still crashing after about 10 minutes of gameplay. I started a new game, no problems. I know that the .dat files get bigger after you sim more years. Perhaps there's a limit on how big they can get before they start to display this behavior. I would also submit that testing with a new league will not expose this app like testing with a more mature league.

For anyone who likes to sim many seasons over a relatively short period of time, they're going to start experiencing these crashes as they push the game beyond an easily managed memory footprint. At 30 seasons, maybe the game simply won't fit in the memory space any longer. Me, I sim game to game, play them out individually, and I haven't got beyond the first couple of seasons, and I've not experienced any crashes. |

Yup, I did try that. It was saved in the offseason, just before arbitration, and I couldn't make more than 3 or 4 contract offers and it would crash.

no ipad probs
for what it is worth I use the original iPad with IOS5 and have had no problems whatsoever with crashing. And I play the game a lot. So it is not on ALL iPads.

Just experienced my first hard crash last night, the game suddenly quit and when I re-started, I found that I had lost my last 3 games.
I'm on a first generation iPad running iOS 5. No background apps were running, though I admit I hadn't re-booted for awhile, so maybe there was some memory fragmentation... Anyway, my save seems OK, except I'm now 3 games behind were I was. Which isn't a bad thing really, because I'd been on a 3 game losing streak. ![]() On the other hand, it makes me a bit nervous now, and I've begun routinely saving after every played game. |
