RIP: Dan Wheldon

I've never really watched Indy, nor Nascar and don't know who the fellow is, but wow...this sounds absolutely tragic. The crash looked absolutely sickening.

I think he's the guy who was born a few miles up the road from where I live. There has been a slew of deaths recently in US motor sports -are the governing bodies going to do an F1 and make the sport too safe and less fun

It's horrific.

Dan Wheldon: 1978 - 2011

Such a great day planned with so many big things. Dan winning the Indy 500 this year and a chance today to win 5 million. Then, boom. He's gone. Life is just so damn unpredictable.

what are they playing on ESPN2 right now? It's after his death but is this just a memorial service to him?

they said they reached practice speeds of 225 MPH

The drivers decided to do a five lap tribute to Dan.

ESPN said that his two sons were by his side when he passed. I can't describe how my heart breaks for them and his family.

One boy 2 years old and the other born earlier this year.

I am a hard core racing fan.

Dan was a great champion and gentleman.

I knew he was gone when they placed a tarp over his car. A tarp over a race car is a burial shroud. I've been watching racing long enough to know this.

He will be missed. I am heartbroken tonight.

RIP to Dan Wheldon, and RIP to IndyCar racing. Both allowed to die by inept officials who thought 34 cars on a high-banked oval at over 200 mph was in anyway a good idea. I hope they sleep easy as I'm guessing for all their other screw-ups I've read about they won't be resigning over this either.

When all these cars race on an oval track at over 200 mph and the field as close at it was ... and when there's an accident, there is nothing you can do.

Just a horrible crash and a very sad ending.

R.I.P. Dan Wheldon
