Moving players between rosters to plug the gaps
OK, so here I am, 5 games into my OOTP12 + Baltimore Orioles career. With a 2-2 record going into the second game against the Tigers (1-0), I'm 8-6 down in the 7th inning at Camden Yards. Starting pitcher Brian Matusz picks up an injury pitching, while in the next inning Luke Scott had to be helped off the field. I replace Matusz with Gregg (who i forgot to warm-up, during which Matusz gives up another 2 runs) and Scott with Pie, who himself then goes and gets injured. The game is lost 14-6. All very well, but suddenly I've got a problem in the outfield. I don’t have enough depth in the 25-man roster to pick up the injuries (unless i put someone with a '-' rating in at LF), so I'm thinking I can move people from the 40-man roster to plug the gaps.
When I try it, it tells me the 25-man roster is full, so I guess I'll have to move players off that roster and into the 40-man roster to make way. But if i do this, can I move them back to the active without any penalties/restrictions? In other news,: I'm really enjoying OOTP12 and learning all about baseball. I got me a copy of "Watching Baseball Smarter" by Zack Hample which helps a lot (apart from the bit about 'tagging', he's really lost me there). Following the offseason is very instructional too, I'm listening to all the podcasts in the car on the way to work and getting familiar with the players and the teams. I've decided to follow the Orioles (stop laughing!) because, well, I liked the town when I went there and I like a team that has potential to be good, but which needs a lot of work! In real life I'm a soccer fan and I follow Aberdeen FC, a club from my hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland (a tenuous link there to the Aberdeen Ironbirds, the Orioles minor league affiliate) who have seen better days, mainly in the early 80's - just like the O's! Any Orioles fans out there? |

If your players are injured, you can put them on the disabled list, which allows you to call up a replacement. They will have to stay on the disabled list for at least 15 days though, so if they only have a short time out it may be better to play someone out of position.

For example, most online leagues run 7 game day sims at a time and set their DL to 14 days vice 15 so it works in unison with the sim schedule. |

I know all that, but as he is new to the sport and running an MLB league I thought it was sensible to not give a ridiculously complicated answer. I did say a minimum of 15 days to cover the two as well.

You can also move players down to the minors, some may need to clear waivers depending on service time, and move others up to the 25 man. |

There's nothing ridiculously complicated about my answer, it's staright forward. And if he's new to the sport and game then it's a great opportunity to explain some of the intricacies to him. And, again, it is not necessarily 15 days, so your statement about a "minimum" of 15 days is incorrect. It depends on the league setting, as I explained above. If your DL is set to 14 or 10 days, then it wouldn't be a minimum of 15 days. Last edited by Bluenoser; 10-06-2011 at 12:05 PM. |

Ah now, see - that's what I meant. I can see my replacements in the 40-man roster, but I cant see them in the active roster (the line-ups screen). When I try to add them to the 25-man it tells me it's full up. So I have to replace one with another by taking one out of the active and into the 40-man. Apologies if I am messing up the terms, but I hope you know what I mean.

I'm gonna assume he hasn't made any changes in the league setup.
If the players who are injured are going to be out more than a few days (over a week), it's probably best to just 15 day DL them, and call someone up from Norfolk, make sure that player is on the 40 man roster, though.

25-man roster = players from the 40-man you want available today To free up space on the 25-man for your replacements, someone's going to have to go to the disabled list (15 or 60-day, depending on injury length). Then you can move a person to your 25-man from the 15 players not already there, but on the 40-man. I hope that helped. If it didn't, ignore it completely. :P |
