newbie #3 | Reading the game log

Hi, so last night was a big night for the Orioles! In OOTP12 I played my first ever game, beating Tampa 6-1 with Luke Scott picking up 1 HR and the Player of the Game award. I had a go at rotating the pitchers around - Matusz pitching 6 innings, Gonzalez as MR pitching in the 7th and 8th with Uehara closing the game off with the Orioles leading comfortably.

And in real life, the Orioles come from behind to snatch a dramatic last innings win that completes the Red Sox' end-of-season collapse and sends Tampa in the postseason. The irony of it all was not lost!

So I've completely got the box-score thing down, but reading the game log during and after the game, I see these kinds of entries.

Flyball, 9LD
Groundbal, 34D
Groundball, 6M
Groundball, 56D
Ground out U3 (Groundball , 3S)

I know what flyballs and groundballs are, but what are the numbers and letters afterwards refering to? I had a search online but couldn't find anything. I'm guessing it's something to do with the direction they went in, and possibly even the player the ball ended up with, but I've not been able to make the connection ...

Cheers

Your guess is correct. They refer to the direction and depth of the batted ball on the field as displayed in the ball location chart.

So:

9LD = deep in right field on the foul line
34D = deep in the hole between first and second
6M = middle infield, to the shortstop side of second
56D = deep in the hole between second and third
U3 = unassisted out at first (3S = shallow infield toward first base)
