Rehab Assignments; Benefits & Length

I did a quick search and found threads regarding issues with the rehab assignment system. What I am curious about is whether there is a benefit to the rehab assignment and how long you guys generally leave them on the assignment. Should I promote them when they start dominating? After a set period of time?

It all involves the rust factor. If you send someone to rehab in the minors then when he comes back he will pitch better then if you put him right back on your active roster, after an injury.

I usually only use rehab assignments for injuries that lasted long then 70+ days. It also depends on when it happened in the season, if its close to the playoffs then I don't put him on rehab because I need them for the playoffs.

The time they spend in rehab is already set and can't be changed. I think its 15 days for hitters and 30 days for pitchers. You can't promote them until that time is up and once the time is up you have to promote them.

Actually, you can recall you players from rehab assignments any time you like before their maximum allotted rehab time is up. Maximum rehab time is 20 days for hitters and 30 days for pitchers, but there is no minimum time. How long you leave a player on rehab depends on a variety of factors:
  • As AirmenSmith notes, rehab assignments help knock the rust off players. Of course, some players may not have as much rust to shake off as others, or are just naturally more ready to go when the bell rings, so use your best judgment here. If a player is tearing it up, he may well be ready despite not having used all his rehab days.
  • Related to the above consideration is the length of time a player was injured. The longer a player is out, the more thought you should give to maximizing his rehab time since he's had more time to develop rust.
  • Injury proneness is another factor. If a player tends to get injured a lot, maybe you don't want to rush him back too quick, or maybe you do want to rush him back so as to get as much major league usage out of him before his next blowout.
  • Take into account the nature of the injury. A pitcher on rehab for an injured elbow is a good candidate to be babied. A pitcher on rehab for a high ankle sprain might not need as much rehab time.
  • Of course, your major league team's circumstances play a big role in this. If you're scratching and clawing for a playoff spot, you probably don't want to be wasting key players' PA/IP in the minors.

I understand I can recall them anytime I want before maximum allotted time is up. I was just curious if the rehab assignment really works or if its there for the realistic factor.

I've got a guy, Carlos Beltran, who has a very good 2 games at AAA after his rehab assignment is up. I could use him. Just curious how I would tell he is ready. Might just promote him now.

Bring him up..

I know with pitchers, I've had a horrible time bringing them right to the MLB club without some rehab time.

What is the indicator you use before bringing them up? Solid stats or just a couple starts? My biggest thing is that in real life they would talk to the player and make a decision on how they felt and things like that. It would be nice to have something in the game where you get an email saying the player feels they are at full strength or something on their player page.

I base mine on stats in the minors, if they are playing well.. I bring them up.. for pitchers it sometimes takes the full rehab, since they don't pitch every day.

Postion players I usually let them play just a few games.

Longer injuries tend to cause more rust, so a longer rehab assignment makes sense. The minimum injury length that causes rust is 14 days according to a prior post from Markus.
