Help Me Choose My Team MVP

Every season I pick my team's MVP (I call it "Maxwell's Man" since the GM's name is Maxwell Davids.)

This is a fake league using real players. League started in 1921 and now it is 1956. 154 game season, 1 league with 6 teams in two divisions.

Anyways this season I have a really tough choice between:

Mickey Mantle: 43 HRs, 125 RBIs, .326 BA. Won the triple crown. next closest in batting average is .320. He led the league in BA, OB%, Slugging %, OB+Slugging%, Weighted OBA, VORP, Runs Scored, BB, Isolated Power. 14 Stolen bases (7th overall). The first player to win the Triple Crown in league history. (League record for HR's is 49, 195 for RBIs). Good defence this season mostly at RF, 26 games in Centre. Obviously best hitter on my team this season although the rest of my starters put up good offensive numbers too. So while he lead my team's offence and was pivotal in making my team dominate offensively, I had plenty of other offence so if Mantle had a poorer season my team still would have put up great numbers.

Choice two is Ralph Branca. 26 Wins, 8 Loses, ERA 1.92, 281 IP, 67 BB, 185 K's. Led the league in ERA (next closest 2.48). Wins (next closest 23, 22 and 20 wins). 8 Shutouts. Opponents batting average .213. League average for ERA is 4.06. Obviously he was my dominate starter and held my pitching staff together (my pitchers ended up putting up good numbers and was overall very good but there were times in the season they struggled, Branca was dominate all season long). 36 games 28 of them quality starts. He went down with an injury (14 months, Tommy John Surgery) in early September so he missed a few weeks.

Normally the first triple crown winner in the league means no brainer for the team MPV. But Branca was really dominating and there were stages in my season when he was the only starter pitching well. That ERA is fantastic for this league and much better than anyone else that season. He missed at least 4 starts due to the injury so he probably would have had a few more wins. Mantle was fairly consistent all season long and has the best overall numbers for my hitters but I had a number of other hitters that put up good numbers too.

Tough call. Any advice?

I'd have to give it to the guy who plays every day.

I agree. Branca was dominant but only played every 4 games or so...

If Mantle has won the award before, give it to Branca. That way Maxwell keeps everyone happy. But if neither has won before, Mantle is the man.

And Maxwell should leave the award decision making to sportswriters so it doesn't come back to bite him in negotiations.

Triple Crown Award Winners should always win unless someone had a 56 game hit streak. Branca gets the Cy young.

Good points. Mantle hasn't won the award before, while Branca won it last year (along with the Outstanding Pitcher Award and the last three years it has gone to a pitcher). So Mantle should be given credit for his first superstar season, and being the first triple crown winner in league history. Granted getting back to back "Maxwell's" is not unprecedented since Vern Law did that before Branca's win last season.

But it's probably time to give it to a batter...

And if two writers leave the triple crown winner off the ballot.
Just saying.

Finally finished the championship series (won it in 7 games) and ended the season to get the awards.

Not only Mantle got a triple crown so did my team in that Mantle won Best Batter, Branca won best pitcher and Frank Robinson won Rookie of the year. I suspect I will win Manager of the year one again. Mantle also won the gold glove for RF.
I gave Mantle the Maxwell's Man award even though he did little in the championship series.
