Need this option when playing out games!!!!

So I'm tired of playing out games against the CPU and their up 8-0 or 10-3 (or a large lead) and there still stealing bases against me!! Obviously an unwritten baseball rule but you don't steal when your up a large amount yet they do it all the time. Is there anyway to add the option to bean the batter so we can send the team a message?

Just curious.

#1) A team should play all 9 innings. Not hold back simply because the other side is failing. Usually the unwritten rules are only cited by the team who's unable to play well enough to keep themselves in the game.

#2) There is already an option to hit batters.

#3) Personally I feel any pitcher in the MLB that intentionally throws at or behind a batter should be suspended for the rest of the season, if not arrested on criminal charges of attempted assault with a deadly weapon.

Note to self: Princess Kenny was really off-putting.

It's baseball, not softball.

I was unaware temper tantrums were a part of the game of baseball.

I have mixed views on this. IRL I just don't get intentionally hitting players for this, or getting upset about a team playing to win. Maybe if it's 8-0 or 10-3 we should just call the game over if you're no longer allowed to play properly.

That said, if it happens IRL, it should happen in OOTP. So if there is a statistically relevant unwritten rule, it should be coded in OOTP as well that these things are more/less likely to happen than at other times.

Interesting. Do you feel that would also apply to a Football (Amer) player who 'speared' (at full speed) another player in the gut (or back of the head)with his helmet?

How about a Hockey Player who slashes w/his stick at an unprotected area of the body? Or heck - Isn't it outright assault when two of them drop gloves and square off even tho it's in front of thousands of fans?

Just curious. This has been a topic of convo between some friends of mine for a while. imho, you've picked prob the hardest one to 'prove' intent on. (Innocent until proven guilty...prove it didn't 'slip')

This calls for the good old "Pine Tar" clip...The fun starts at around the 2:40 mark.

Always a good one. As to your previous comment I agree, it's pretty much an impossible thing to prove which is why something like what I suggested would ever happen. More a hypothetical thing assuming someone's intentions could be known without a doubt.

I don't share the common disregard for this particular unwritten rule, but the key point is that I want the AI to mimic the behavior of real players and managers, regardless of what I or anybody else may think of that behavior.

Now, Branch Rickey used to call throwing at batters "the purpose pitch," by which he meant that you don't knock them down just to fulfill your nature as a sadist and sociopath, you do it to accomplish a specific purpose. When a pitcher throws at a batter because his team has violated the unwritten rule about stealing bases with a big lead, the purpose is to send a simple message to the opposing team: "don't do that any more."

If the AI is not programmed to receive that message and possibly act on it -- and I don't believe it is -- then throwing at the hitters accomplishes nothing and I'm not going to bother with it.

Nor should you.

Anthony Castrovince at mlb.com wrote a comprehensive article after Carrasco and Weaver(?) got suspended for throwing at a batter's head. Basically he argued that purposefully endangering your team's lead or pennant chances just to make a point was detrimental to the game.

Plus, I'm with megaman on this one. Intent is hard to prove, of course, but if the umpire is convinced the pitcher is headhunting, that's a good enough reason to suspend the player for me.

Incidentally, if the game is out of reach (as in OP's case), why not just let the game auto-finish so you don't have to watch the computer 'break unwritten rules'?

There's a difference between playing all out and slaughtering a dead horse. I despise when the AI runs on me when leading by 7 or more. I then proceed to bean them as often as they run. Beaning and "Head Hunting" are 2 different things. Hitting Barry Bonds in his protected armor isnt as big of a deal vs hitting a player above the torso. I love OOTP but it it fictional and can never fully replicate real MLB and it's unwritten rules.

now that being said, idk how hard it would be to code to allow ai to adhere to 'unwritten rules.'

codeing the ai to do anything is always hard. Getting the ai to act smart has always been a tricky thing.

So far in my search of the Official MLB rules I've yet to find the section covering temper tantrums. Must be one of those darn "unwritten rules."

You know if they were so damn important you'd think after all this time someone would write them down.

lol

For the record, I don't care for the idea of stealing bases with a big lead either. That IS one of the unwritten rules of real-life baseball, like it or not. But I'm not going to get worked up over whether or not that rule is in OOTP. It's just not worth it to me.

Ah, but in that case, we wouldn't have unwritten rules. That would be boring.

I don't think emotions are in the rule book at all. I suppose we should expect players to have the same feelings whether they win or lose. Whether they are safe or out. I mean, really, if it's not in the rule book, it simply shouldn't be a part of the game. Next time a hitter curses when he swings and misses, he should be suspended.
