What are the odds?

To set the scene, as a diehard UK Redsox fan, I watch as many games as possible on ESPN America, whether NESN, Fox, ESPN or even YES feeds.

For some time, I have noticed at Fenway, that there are two fans who seem to be at every game. One wears yellow headphones and the other bears a slight resemblance to Jerry Springer.

Last night, during the Yankees game, I decided to hit google to see if there was any info on these 2 gents. The chap with the headphones, who I always refer to as 'cans' apparently is a Red Sox adviser, but it is the identity of 'Jerry' that caused some surprise.

His name is Dennis Drinkwater who owns Giant Glass. The surprise comes from the fact that Drinkwater is also my surname.

So, I was wondering, what are the odds of someone watching a foreign based sport, supporting a particular team, and sharing a not particularly common surname with a fan who is always present on tv coverage of games.

This also shows how bored I am on a Sunday lunchtime without a Formula 1 race on!!

Cheers

For the most part I'd agree with you but remember you are watching people in "New England", so the name coincidence may not be that surprising.

Yes, very English according to these two web sites (Googled "origin of last name drinkwater" - the Internet is truly amazing):

Surname Database: Drinkwater Last Name Origin
Drinkwater Family Crest and History

On a side note, referring to a "chap with the headphones" is going to bring back bad memories for Cub fans. Google "Steve Bartman" for that one.

I think it's a remarkable connection, especially given the unexplained interest in the fan and finally, sharing such an unusual name. I give that one a, "How cool is that?"
