How Do Online Leagues Work?

Is there a link to someplace that explains exactly how online leagues work, not for commissioners but for ordinary players?

You can contact me on AIM, juicebox3313, and I'll answer any questions you have and/or explain the whole process to you.

I'd rather not have to download the AIM software onto my machine. Could you give me the outline here? Basically, what I don't understand is how the games are played. Does the league commissioner play the games and then send you the save files? If so, then how do you handle trades, the amateur draft etc.?

A basic outline is like this:

  1. The commissioner starts an online league by setting up a website and forum and an OOTP game of his preference.
  2. The commissioner advertises open teams
  3. A new league member will receive instructions on where to download a starter league file and what to do with it in order to load it into his OOTP 12 software
  4. League members export their teams via FTP in-game.
  5. Trades are usually negotiated via the league message board's private messaging system, via email or even via some sort of chat software on or off-site.
  6. Trades are posted and confirmed by both parties in the appropriate forum on the league message board, where the commish will read and process them in-game from.
  7. Commish imports yours and other league members' export files(which reflect all roster moves you may have done)
  8. The commish will process any other needed in-game transactions and then sim X amount of games.
  9. The commish will then upload a new league file.
  10. League members then download the new league file via the in-game interface
  11. Rinse and repeat
