Reading odb files
So I'd been assuming you could read these with OpenOffice - the odb files in the stats directory. I'd never had a reason to give that a try in OOTP11, but I wanted to open the transaction file for OOTP12. However, OpenOffice wants to open it as an ASCII file.
Does anyone know what program can be used to open these files?

No, the odb files for those features is not an Open Office format - it's a sort of tab delimited file but I can't get it to open with returns/linefeeds

It's a custom format designed by OOTP developments, you won't be able to open it in any program.
What file are you trying to look at? The historical_database.odb core files are all in the stats directory.

It's not the historical database file. It's the transactions and lineups files. I was just wondering if there were ways of editing them.
My basic reason, though I can think of a million others, is that they don't work for 19th century. I'm guessing that the transactions in the files (I'm not even sure if there are lineups that old in the lineup file) give real-world transactions, whereas the database had to be heavily modified for OOTP to be able to do automatic team movements for 19th century play. I was thinking I might go on in and edit them so that it at least doesn't make it completely unplayable with historical transactions/lineups on (which is the case now).

Looks like Markus turned off the option for pre-1901 leagues in today's update anyway.

I do still wish we could actually look at these files. I tend to like to make tweaks to history, and it would be cool to be able to do it by tweaking the file.

For the transaction database to work with pre-1901 it would totally have to be reworked from nearly scratch. So many players switched teams and team changed that it is chaotic. I took a look at it when working on the transactions database but time constraints and general confusion made it impractical.
It's something that maybe I will look at at a later date. The lineups aren't there anyway.

Oh yes, I'd imagine it's a bit of a monster. I remember looking at it when the idea of having this in the game first came up in a thread some months back. I wasn't going to try to replicate history, just make it so that the teams each have enough players to move forward.
I guess that's moot anyway, since Markus disabled it. But I also wish I could make little edits here and there - add in some fictional players, set up what-ifs like the Red Sox not trading Ruth, etc. Since when you turn on the historical transactions, it seems to override everything else (as it should), the only way to fiddle with things would be to make changes to that file, but it seems that can't be done. It seems odd to me that this was specifically made to be uneditable, when OOTP has always seemed to go for maximum customizability.
