Question for those who use the DH

I've heard about how the DH position is grayed out in the lineup, so that the DH can't be put in the field. What happens if you insert your pitcher into the lineup?

I'm fairly certain that it wont let you do it, and if you put a relief pitcher in the lineup (as opposed to the pitchers spot) it'll only let you select the non-pitching positions from the drop down.

I'll let you know in a minute.

Cyromaniac is correct. If you insert a pitcher into the line up in a DH league it uses them as a pinch runner/hitter or defensive replacement in the field and there is no pitcher selection on the position drop down menus.

Wait: You mean you don't have the option in the game to put your DH at another position? That is crazy for a baseball game of this quality. How hard is it to lose the DH if you do that?

I wish I hadn't read this.

This is why I eliminated the DH rule in my leagues.

The reason you can't is because OOTP's simulation engine just can't handle it right now. It's not due to ignoring a rule or anything like that, it's just that the programming can't do it.

What is once seen cannot be unseen.

Yes, this is a major flaw, and it's a really ugly one that should never have existed.

But it does exist, and many of us who know about it hate it.

Actually, there's a weird bug (or at least there was in earlier versions, not sure if its still in v11) where if you are playing out your game and your DH gets hurt, then you can change one of your players already in the game at a position to DH and insert the new player in a defensive position. It made absolutely no sense and I've always played with the personal rule not to take advantage of the opportunity.

I'm 99.9% sure that in MLB, the manager does not have that option if his DH gets hurt (i.e., the pinch runner or pinch hitter simply becomes the DH and if he takes a position then the team loses the DH for the game.

I don't think it was a bug, I think it's just another problem where the programming doesn't understand how the rule is supposed to work. To the game it makes sense to anyone with the capacity to think it's totally absurd. Not sure if it's fixed....

Does anyone have the actual RL data on how many times the DH is actually being switched in a season?

That's a good question. I just don't want to be the one to go look for it. Call me lazy.

According to the bb-ref play index there were this many instances of a player playing both DH and another position in the same game since 1973:

C: 139
1B: 192
2B: 56
3B: 75
SS: 54
LF: 120
CF: 77
RF: 118
P: 2 (Jose Canseco and Keith Atherton)

That's a total of 833 times, or 22 times a season.

Are there any other things that happen 22 times per MLB season that OOTP doesn't model?

Dunno how often it happens in RL, but OOTP doesn't allow for players being thrown out at home trying to score from third on a wild pitch / passed ball.

If I'm right, this was not a problem in OOTP8. True?
