When are rookies added?

When using the assign players to real teams in lieu of amateur draft option, on what date does the game add the players?

First day of preseason, about a month before Spring Training.

This can a bit problematic for the periods when there was essentially free agency if you want to play it that way. Prior to the late 1880's the reserve clause was limited if non-existent. The problem is the team does not know what rookies are being imported and sometimes signs guys they don't need. Not a huge deal but problematic if you are running free agency. There is a solution that Gambo or Spritze did for this which makes all new rookies FAs though. You just have to remember to check the FA pool in preseason.
