Koana Islands Baseball League - Quickstart due to popular demand

Some of you may remember my failed attempt at a story following my fictional league the Koana Islands Baseball League.

I have still been receiving a fair few PMs asking if I could do a quickstart for the game. So here it is.

The Koana Islands
Koana Islands (pronounced Co-ahna Islands), officially the Republic of Koana Islands is an Oceania country situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It's closest neighbours are Australia to the east, Madagascar to the west and Indonesia to the North. The capital city is Megopolis.

Around 95.6 million people reside in Koana Islands, with the majority concentrated in the southern part of the country. It is the third largest country in the world in terms of area and the most sparsely populated country after only Australia and Finland. The native language of most of the population is Koanian, which is part of the North Germanic language family and is most closely related to Swedish, Danish and Norwegian. The second official language of Koana Islands – English – is the native language of 5.5% of the population, although most people under the age of about 30 can speak some English. Koana Islands is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in Megopolis and local governments in over 1,000 municipalities. A total of about twelve million residents live in the Greater Megopolis area (which includes Megopolis. Black Island and Jonestown), and a third of the country's GDP is produced there. Other major cities include Bayside, New Auckland, Humoor, Embleton, Vizhune and Conneaut.

Koana Islands was historically always independent from the rest of the world. With many explorers, such as a James Cook (who discovered Australia) passing on claiming the land. During World War Two, in which the Koana Islands remained neutral, the Islands opened their doors to many Finnish, Polish and even German refugees. Approximately 75% of the Islands' population are now descended from the refugees. The Koana Islands joined the United Nations in 1955, and has been ranked the most stable country in the world, in a survey based on social, economic, political and military indicators.

Koana Islands was a relative latecomer to industrialization, remaining a largely agrarian country until the 1950s. Thereafter, economic development was rapid, and the country reached the world's top income levels in the 1970s. Between 1970 and 1990, Koana Islands built an extensive welfare state. In the aftermath of the country's severe depression in the late 1980s, successive governments have changed the Koanian economic system through some privatisation, deregulation and tax cuts.

Koana Islands is well placed in many international comparisons of national performance such as the share of high-technology manufacturing and health care. The country was ranked 4th in the 2005 Legatum Prosperity rating, which is based on economical performance and quality of life.

Get Around
By plane
The quickest and often the most convenient way of long-distance intercity travel in the Koana Islands is by plane. Coast-to-coast travel takes about 6 hours from east to west, and 5 hours from west to east (varying due to winds), compared to the days necessary for land transportation. Most cities in the Koana are served by one or two airports; Many small towns also have some passenger air service, although you may need to detour through a major hub airport to get there. Depending on where you are starting, it may be cheaper to drive to a nearby large city and fly or, conversely, to fly to a large city near your destination and rent a car.

By train
The Koana Islands has an excellent, reliable, and affordable railway system, which reaches almost every part of the country. Unless you travel by plane, rail will be your major mode of transportation. Almost all long-distance and many regional trains are operated by Koana Tag ("Koana Rail"), the national railway company. Megopolis also has an extensive Subway system that reaches Black Island and Jonestown.

By car
On the smaller islands such as Princeton and Hollyoak, driving takes you quickly from one place to the other. On other Islands the distances tend to be bigger between the different sites so the time spent driving may be long. Unless you really like driving, it is often more convenient to take the train or fly to the sites, particularly on the main land. Traveling by night can be dangerous due to unexpected animals on the roads and the cold nights during the winter. Collisions with wildlife are not an uncommon cause of car accidents.

By thumb
Koana has a reputation for being a pretty difficult country to hitch in, though it's still quite possible to hitchhike (but not assured to be risk-free). Ordinary people are often reluctant to pick up strangers... Truck drivers are probably most likely to pick up hitchhikers, so target them. Asking at gas stations works pretty well. Bus stops are common places to attract attention, position yourself before the actual bus stop so the vehicle can stop at the stop. This works best if the road is widened at the bus stop, allowing cars to pull off easily.

By bike
Most Koana cities have excellent bike paths, and renting a bike can be a quick and healthy method of getting around locally.

By foot
Cars are by law required to stop at any unattended crosswalks (zebra stripes in the road without red-lights) to let pedestrians cross the road. But keep in mind that you are required to make eye contact with the driver so that they know that you are about to cross the street.

Talk
Hegh (hay) is the massively dominant greeting in Koana, useful on everyone. You can even say it when you leave. If you need to get someones attention, whether it's a waiter or you need to pass someone one in a crowded situation, a simple ursekka ("excuse me") will do the trick. You will find yourself pressed to overuse it, and you sometimes see people almost chanting it as a mantra when trying to exit a crowded place like a bus or train.

Stay Safe
Koana Islands enjoys a comparatively low crime rate and is, generally, a very safe place to travel. Use common sense at night, particularly on Friday and Saturday when the youth of Koana Islands hit the streets to get drunk and in some unfortunate cases look for trouble. It is statistically more likely that your home country is less safe than Koana Islands, so heed whatever warnings you would do in your own country and you will have no worries.

Racism is generally of minor concern, especially in the cosmopolitan major cities, but there have been a few rare but highly publicized incidents of black or Arab people getting beaten up by gangs. The average visitor, though, is highly unlikely to encounter any problems.

Pickpockets are rare, but not unheard of, especially in the busy tourist months in the summer. Most Koanians carry their wallets in their pockets or purses and feel quite safe while doing it. Parents often leave their sleeping babies in a baby carriage on the street while visiting a shop, and in the countryside cars and house doors are often left unlocked.

On the other hand, you have to be careful if you buy or rent a bicycle. Bicycle thieves are everywhere, never leave your bike unlocked even for a minute.

Respect
Koanians generally have a relaxed attitude towards manners and dressing, and a visitor is unlikely to offend them by accident. Common sense is quite enough in most situations, but there are a couple of things one should keep in mind:

Koanians are a famously taciturn people who have little time for small talk or social niceties, so don't expect to hear phrases like "thank you" or "you're welcome" too often. The Koanian language lacks a specific word for "please", so Koanians sometimes forget to use it when speaking English, even when they don't mean to be rude. Also lacking in Koanian is the distinction between "he" and "she", which may lead to confusing errors. Loud speaking and loud laughing is not normal in Koana Islands and may irritate some Koanians. Occasional silence is considered a part of the conversation, not a sign of hostility or irritation.

All that said, Koanians are generally helpful and polite, and glad to help confused tourists if asked. The lack of niceties has more to do with the fact that in Koanian culture, honesty is highly regarded and that one should open one's mouth only when it is really to mean what one is about to say. Do not say "maybe later" when there is no later time to be expected. A visitor is unlikely to receive many compliments from Koanians, but conversely, they can be fairly sure that the compliments they do receive are genuine. In the more remote areas of Koana Islands, many locals will be glad to talk to tourists to find out what they think of the country. Koanians take immense pride of their country, and don't like unwarranted criticism. A good talking point is Baseball, in which the majority of Koanians supprt feverishly.

Another highly regarded virtue in Koana Islands is punctuality. A visitor should apologize even for being late for a few minutes. Being late for longer usually requires a short explanation. 15 minutes is usually considered the threshold between being "acceptably" late and very late. Some will leave arranged meeting points after 15 minutes or 30 minutes (maximum). With the advent of mobile phones, sending a text message even if you are only a few minutes late is nowadays a norm. Being late for a business meeting, even by 1-2 minutes, is considered bad form.

The standard greeting is a handshake. Hugs and kisses, even on the cheek, are only exchanged between family members and close friends.

If you are invited to a Koanian home, the only bad mistake visitors can make is not to remove their shoes. During the winter months, particularly in Snowy and Henry Islands shoes will carry a lot of snow or mud, and therefore it is customary to remove them, even during the summer. During the wet season you can ask to put your shoes somewhere to dry during your stay. Very formal occasions at private homes, such as a baptism (often conducted at home in Koana Islands) or somebody's 50th birthday party, are an exception to these rules. In the wintertime, this sometimes means that the guests bring separate clean shoes and put them on while leaving outdoor shoes in the hall. Bringing gifts such as pastry, wine, or flowers to the host is appreciated, but not required.

In Koana Islands there is little in the way of a dress code. The general attire is casual and even in business meetings dressing is somewhat more relaxed than in some other countries.

The Koana Islands Baseball League
The Koana Islands Baseball League (KIBL) is the top league of professional baseball in the Koana Islands. The KIBL competition (sometimes referred to as the Super League for historical purposes) is contested by 36 teams, 24 on New Paul Island, 3 on Henry and Long Islands, 2 on Snowy and Dolphin Islands and 1 each on the Islands of Princeton and North, and is the Southern Hemisphere's elite basebal championship. The KIBL also has the world's highest total attendance figures for a baseball competition. In terms of Koana-wide television ratings it has the highest audiences for its featured games and sells the most merchandise of any Koana Islands sports league.

The Koana Islands Baseball League is the present-day embodiment of Koana Islands' top-level domestic baseball competition, which in turn grew from the Super League and Koana Baseball Leagues, and which has been running continuously since 1949. The KIBL formed in the aftermath of the late 1970s' Super League war as a joint partnership between the sport's national governing body, the Super League Association and the Koana Baseball League after both organisations fought bitterly over television rights and scheduling times.

Many of the teams that were not invited to join the newly formed Super League joined local leagues such as the Elite League, which folded shortly before a game was even played.

As of 2010, teams now have affiliated teams forming Triple-A and Double-A leagues. This was a sudden decision by the league commissioner and has left many teams seething at the lack of warning or input given by the commissioner. Despite this, teams have taken to the new farm system, much like how the MLB in the United States operates with most teams squeezing extra money into their budgets to take on more playing staff. However, all teams still rely on amateurs who turn up on game day to fill in most spots on the line-ups, particularly in Double-A.

The league has announced that a Single-A affiliate is in the works, but will not be incorporated until all the teams have full rosters in their current affiliates.

The Merger
By the late 1970s, competition for players, including separate college drafts, was driving up player salaries. In 1969, in the most high profile such contest and a major boost to the KBL, University of Elon SP James Roy signed with the Elon Dragons in preference to the Super League's New Auckland Warlocks for a then-record $827,000. In 1979, the KBL Commissioner embarked on a campaign to sign players away from the Super League, especially Pitchers, but behind the scenes a number of team owners began action to end the detrimental rivalry.

In an agreement brokered by KBL founder Ben Hunt and Lexington Wasps General Manager Jerry Murphy, the two leagues announced their merger deal on December 8, 1979, to be effective from 1980. The leagues would henceforth hold a Common Draft and an end-of-season Series between the two league champions (to be known as the Championship Series). In the begginning of 1980, the leagues fully merged under the name Koana Islands Baseball League and divided into two conferences (Sigma and Omega) of an equal number of teams. There was also a financial settlement, with the KBL teams paying a combined $18 million over 20 years. There was also strident objection by many Super League fans over their league's loss of its separate identity, name, and distinctive logo.

Although the Super League's identity was all but subsumed by the KBL, the Koana Islands Baseball League's innovations: Names on player jerseys; recruiting at small colleges; gate and television revenue-sharing; establishment of smaler Island franchises; and more wide-open offensive rules, all eventually adopted by the ultra-conservative SL, permanently changed the face of professional baseball in Koana Islands.

Popularity
Baseball is the most popular sport in the Koana Islands. According to a recent survey, Professional baseball moved ahead of Association football as the fans' favorite in 1954, during the emergence of the two former leagues, namely the Super League and the Koana Baseball League. Baseball has remained Koana Islands' favorite sport ever since. In a survey conducted in 2007, the KIBL was the favorite sport of as many people (30%) as the combined total of the next three professional sports--Soccer (15%), auto racing (10%), and rugby (5%). Additionally, baseball's Koana TV viewership ratings now surpass those of other sports, although baseball season comprises of far more games than the seasons of other sports. Furthermore, college baseball is actually the third-most popular sport in the Islands, with 12% of survey respondents listing it as their favorite. Therefore, fully 42% of Koanians consider some level of baseball their favorite sport.

However, the surveys only allow one unaided selection of a "favorite sport." Other studies and polls such as the TVSports Poll and the studies released by the Associated Press and conducted by a Sports Marketing Group from 1988 to 2004, show higher levels of popularity for KIBL baseball since they list from thirty to over 100 sports that each respondent must rate. According to the Associated Press, the Sports Marketing Group polls from 1988 to 2004 show baseball to be the most popular spectator sport in the Koana Islands. The AP stated that "In the most detailed survey ever of Koana's sports tastes" researching "114 spectator sports they might attend, follow on television or radio or read about in newspapers or magazines, the KIBL topped all sports with 39 percent of Koanians saying they loved it or considered it one of their favorites". The total percentage of Koanians who liked or loved baseball exceeds 60% of the general public.

The Koana Islands Baseball League has the highest per-game attendance of any domestic professional sports league in the world, drawing over 35,000 spectators per game for each of its two most recently completed seasons.

New Dallas Fleet (AA)
Population: 289,445
Originating around 1789 as a small trading community near the eponymous Elon Creek, Elon grew quickly after the opening of the main road, now known as Highway 73 in 1825, with the city as its western terminus. By 1900, Elon was the 8th largest city in the country, and went on to become a major railroad hub, the largest grain-milling center in the country, and the home of the one of largest steel-making operation in the world. The latter part of the 20th Century saw a reversal of fortunes: by the year 1990 the city had fallen back below its 1900 population levels. The rerouting of freight trains by the opening of the Latitude Rail was a factor in the decline of the city. The closing or relocating of many of the steel mills and other heavy industries in the area also contributed to the decline. Elon has made efforts to stem the decline, and the city's move away from heavy industry and toward a service and bioinformatics economy has brought improved air and water quality, which benefit not only residents and tourists but the bioregion as a whole.

Humoor is notable for its mix of Koanian and contemporary architecture, its extensive parks and gardens, as well as its diverse, multicultural society. It has long been a running joke amonst the local population that despite being one of the largest cities in the country, Humoor is not recognized as a sporting city, despite having one of the most successful baseball teams in KIBL history.

Approximately 75% of the KoanaF1 industry's employees and drivers are based within two hours of downtown Jaxon City. Jaxon City is also the future home of the KoanaF1 Hall of Fame, expected to be completed in 2009. The already large presence of the racing technology industry along with the newly built dragstip, which is located just north of Jaxon City in the residential area, is influencing some of the top professional drag racers to move their shops from more expensive areas like Conneaut to the Jaxon City area as well. The center city/uptown area of Jaxon City has seen remarkable growth over the last decade. Numerous residential units continue to be built uptown, including over 20 skyscapers either under construction, recently completed, or in the planning stage. Many new restaurants, bars and clubs now operate in the Uptown area. Several projects are transforming the Midtown area.

Jonestown Broncos
Marceau Raiders (AAA)
Ferritrand Clippers (AA)
Population: 481,613
The Borough of Jonestown is coextensive with Jonestown City, the southernmost county in the state of Megopolis. Until 1975, the borough was officially named the Borough of Jonestown. Jonestown City has been sometimes called "the forgotten borough" by inhabitants who feel neglected by the city government. Jonestown is overall the most suburban of the three boroughs of Megopolis. With its late Gothic church, Jonestown grew last century into a city of a reasonable size thanks largely to the incorporation of a neighbouring borough, and has grown extensively over the last three decades. Kacy Park is situated in the middle of a large Nature reserve, in between two of the bigger suburbs in the area.

Lexington Wasps
Ljungby Cougars (AAA)
Tropslia Bees (AA)
Population: 897,689
Lexington's reputation was forged as a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution, a fact which led to Lexington being known as "the workshop of the world" or the "city of a thousand trades". Although Lexington's industrial importance has declined, it has developed into a national commercial centre, being named as the best place in the Dolphin Island to locate a business, and the 7th best in Koana Islands.

A distinctive and spacious city, as well as wide main roads, characterize the image of this city. Traffic jams on the roads are limited. The tricky lay-out of the one-way streets will surely confront the tourist time and time again. Goodman Stadium is located across the river Judgement in the Shopping Mall hub of the town.

Megopolis Titans
Megopolis Metro Stars (AAA)
Oakville Mercury (AA)
Population: 6,634,725
Megopolis is a major commercial, financial, and cultural center of both the Koana Islands and the world. Megopolis has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities. Megopolis has the largest central business district in the Koana Islands.

Megopolis is a megacity built up around a bay. You won't find a downtown area here because this city has grown with virtually no planning over the course of time. As a result, Gothica Stadium is located very close to a Soccer Stadium by the exact same name.

Myrtle Beach Flames
Summerhaven Starlings (AAA)
Ceara City Heat (AA)
Population: 193,854
Myrtle Beach is noted for its magnificent views of the ocean, its usually warm and cloud-free climate and its surfbreak. The frequently visited tourist beach, is actually fairly short, with half of it marked off for surfers. For some distance into the ocean the water is quite shallow, although there are numerous rocks on the bottom, so waders should watch where they put their feet. As with most ocean beaches the waves can have some force, particularly on windy days. The surf at Myrtle Beach is known to its long rolling break, making it ideal for long boarding, tandem surfing and beginners. The beach hosts many events a year, including surf competitions, outdoor performances, and outrigger canoe races. Myrtle Beach is the world famous tourist district of Koana Islands, located just north of the Gold Coast. Numerous hotels, shops, and nightlife opportunities are located along the strip, including an amusement park and the GHT Arena.

New Auckland Warlocks
Epping Hornets (AAA)
Applefield Growl (AA)
Population: 4,564,345
New Auckland, situated in the Wilkes Mountains, is the capital of the Wilkes State.

In the course of many years a large city developed from a small settlement around a fish pond. Apart from a small central lake, New Auckland has no real city centre. Nearly the whole city is a mixture of apparently haphazardly built office-buildings, shopping centres and residential buildings. Because of this the traffic situation is very poor. Sadaki Stadium is situated to the north of the city.

Ocean Point Swarm
Glenton Hills Titans (AAA)
Ruskay Claymores (AA)
Population: 768,548
A significant naval port for centuries, Ocean Point is home to the world's oldest dry dock still in use and home to many famous ships. Ocean Point has declined as a naval base in recent years but remains a major dockyard and base for the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Commandos whose Headquarters resides there. There is also a commercial port serving destinations on the continent for freight and passenger traffic. Most of Ocean Point's tourist attractions are related to its naval history. In the last decade Ocean Point's Historic Dockyard has been given a much needed face-lift much like Villanova Park which has recently undergone intensive renovations.

Paradise Lake Warriors
Crystalgrass Bulls (AAA)
New Laynevale Falcons (AA)
Population: 472,743
Paradise Lake is a city on Henry Island built up around the River in which it bears its name. Nearby cities are Caron, Ulster, Mount Nelsondale and Pinebrook. Paradise Lake was originally a trading hub on Henry Island, with many ships docking in Ulster, Pinebrook and Caron.

A nicely structured city with little industry, the majority of jobs are in office tower blocks situated around the river with nearby Apartment blocks and The Arena.

Peanut Valley Prowlers
Flint Sharks (AAA)
Silceaster Islanders (AA)
Population: 395,795
Peanut Valley gets its name from the Valley in which the city was built, which from a top down view looks very similar to a Peanut. Once considered part of a Desert, it is now a leading farming and ranching state. The city's history has included a variety of crime such as illicit gambling, riots, lynchings, and recently, gang violence. Today, the diverse culture of Peanut Valley includes a variety of performance venues, museums, and musical heritage, including the historically-significant jazz scene in North Valley and the modern and influential "Valley Sound." Sports have been important in Peanut Valley for more than a century, and the city currently hosts three professional sports teams. Peanut Valley also has a number of recreational trails and parks located throughout the city.

Rothes Blue Jays
Wingrove Dozers (AAA)
Lukvania Burn (AA)
Population: 651,154
Rothes, pronounced Row-tez is a major center of culture, politics, media, and science on North Island. Its economy is primarily based on the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries, media corporations, environmental services, congress and convention venues. The city serves as a continental hub for air and rail transport, and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Koana Islands. Other industries include traffic engineering, optoelectronics, information technology, vehicle manufacturing, biomedical engineering, and biotechnology. The metropolis is home to world-renowned universities, research institutes, sporting events, orchestras, museums and personalities. Rothes' urban landscape and historical legacy (which has many Scottish ties) has made it a popular setting for international film productions. The city is recognized for its festivals (in particular Scotoberfest), diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and a high quality of living. Rothes has evolved into a global focal point for young individuals and artists attracted by a liberal and modern lifestyle.

Ruysdael Generals
Jekton Stallions (AAA)
Glauchau Bulldogs (AA)
Population: 298,723
It was founded in 1796 at the base of the Wilkes Mountains, and became a manufacturing center owing to its location in the middle of New Paul Island and railroad lines. With the decline of heavy manufacturing, Ruysdael's businesses have diversified into the service economy, including the financial services, insurance, legal, and healthcare sectors, though the city's population has continued to decline. Ruysdael is also noted for its association with rock music; the city is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Ruysdael is also known as the "Green City" due to its many parks and reserves. The city has a feirce rivallry with Thomasburg, whom many see as the "better" city of the two. Tomahawk Stadium is located in the southern suburbs of the inner city.

Saffron Knights
Sarnia Nuts (AAA)
Cumberland Whitecaps (AA)
Population: 412,785
During the Industrial Revolution Saffron experienced dramatic economic expansion and a rapid rise in the population. Although porcelain manufacture and clock making had been major industries in the town, Saffron has since become known as a major mill town and coal mining district. The first coal mine was established at Saffron in 1450 and at its peak there were 1,000 pit shafts within 5 miles (8 km) of the town centre. Mining was so extensive that one of its town councillors once remarked that "a coal mine in the backyard was not uncommon in Saffron". Coal mining ceased during the latter part of the 20th century.

Around the picturesque city centre is full of hustle and bustle. Its wonderful renaissance church, built by Reitinger, the master builder of cathedrals in 1761, which is situated a mere block away from NTL Stadium.

Saphire Coast Sharks
Blackcliff Sting Rays (AAA)
Devlin Broncos (AA)
Population: 409,719
Saphire Coast is capital of the Western State which includes Jaxon City and Grenada. The original city was actually built on the sands of the beach along the coast, but over time, the central business district has moved back inland, and is now situated either side of an island, surrounded by the Emerald Lake.

Part of the main business district of Saphire Coast is on the narrow island, so the traffic on the bridges is quite heavy. The Shark Tank was a new multi-million dollar development located just south of the island, effectively moving the team from its old stadium a few blocks away. Saphire Coast is known for having very passionate fans, and many are petitioning a second team in the city.

Snowflake City Pirates
Silverport Hurricanes (AAA)
Madison Harbour Sharks (AA)
Population: 298,875
Snowflake City is the state capital and most populous city of the Koana Island state of Snowy Island. Founded in 1803 as a penal colony, Snowflake City is Koana's second oldest capital city after Megopolis. In 2006, the city had a greater area population of approximately 298,875. The city is the financial and administrative heart of Snowy Island, and also serves as the home port for the Island. The city is located in the state's North-east on the estuary of the Roy River. The skyline is dominated by Mount Plaistow at 1,271 metres high.

This city is not easy to navigate as a tourist because of its not really distinguishable centre and suburbs which obviously developed without having been carefully planned, due to a lack of city development concepts.

Riverside Stadium remains the oldest Stadium still in use in the Koana Islands.

Stondon Steelers
Wolfmoor Tigers (AAA)
Rushford Aces (AA)
Population: 543,297
Stondon obtained worldwide recognition during the 19th century for its production of steel. Many innovations in the industry were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel. This fuelled an almost tenfold increase in the population during the Industrial Revolution. It gained its city charter in 1893 and became officially titled the City of Stondon. International competition caused a decline in traditional local industries during the 1970s and 1980s, and at the same time the nearby national coal industry collapsed, affecting Stondon's population.

A typical small harbor town which is only a part of a large consolidated city. Everyone heads for the restaurants and cafes along the canal, which is where you will also find the Casino Stadium.

Tempest Lake Skyhawks
Dorwich Silverbacks (AAA)
Texbury Stags (AA)
Population: 221,385
Tempest Lake's economy is primarily driven by law, finance, and government with several notable legal and banking firms, as well as federal, state, and local governmental agencies, located in the downtown area. Tempest Lake is one of twelve cities in the Koana Islands to be home to a Federal Reserve Bank. There are also nine Fortune 500, and thirteen Fortune 1000 companies in the city. Tourism is also important, as many historic sights are in or nearby the city.

Recently Tempest Lake's team, the "Skyhawks" has been put in jeopardy with many fans being driven away from the astronomical ticket prices, led by a very greedy owner. The bigger city of Sandford has also been petitioning for some time to take the franchise, but keeping the team in Tempest Lake until Sandford's city stadium can be upgraded.

Thomasburg Eagles
Tegville Twisters (AAA)
Ridgedam Outlaws (AA)
Population: 1,439,786
Historically a part of the Wilkes State, Thomasburg grew during the 18th and 19th century as a significant centre for coal mining, and glassmaking. Both prior and during this time it was also home to a cotton and linen industry (notably sail making) that did not last through the mid 19th century as well as salt, lime and alkali pits, copper smelting, and brewing. Today, Thomasburg is very much a commercial town. The main industries have since left, become outdated, or have been outsourced leaving the float and patterned rolled glass producer Donalds, a world leader in their industry, as the town's one remaining large industrial employer.

Thomasburg has a fierce rivallry with Ruysdael, with many people seeing Thomasburg as the more picturesque of the two. Thomasburg's stadium "The Big Top" is the most modern stadium in the Koana Islands.

Ulster Gladiators
Ashington Bears (AAA)
Circleshire Steelers (AA)
Population: 382,894
Situated on the north side of Henry Island, the city developed from a small settlement, though it owes its name to the area in Ireland, from which the first Mayor of the town was born. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade and it later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the river, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres. These industries have since experienced severe decline and closure, and the city today is largely a business and cultural centre, with a particular reputation for nightlife.

Ulster has a reputation for being a fun-loving city with many bars, restaurants and nightclubs. More recently, Ulster has become popular as a destination for Stag and Hen parties. Ulster was in the top ten of the country's top night spots.

Vizhune Vipers
Wellen Wolves (AAA)
Harchester Aztecs (AA)
Population: 1,894,523
Vizhune is the second largest town in the Northern State. Popularly known as "the Viz" or simply "Viz", Vizhune is situated in the geographic centre of the Great Desert. It was the fourth-fastest-growing large city in the nation from 2000-2006. Vizhune's weather is alternately dry or humid depending on prevailing winds, turning hot in the summer, mild to cool winters subject to descending northern cold fronts in the winter with cool to cold nights, and comfortably warm and rainy in the spring and fall. Vizhune receives about a dozen sub-freezing nights each year, occasionally (about once every couple winters) seeing some sort of wintry precipitation (i.e. sleet/freezing rain), but accumulation and snow itself is not very common.

The city's only top-level professional sports team, and consequently the team most Vizzians follow, is the Vizhune Vipers. The Vipers have been playing in Vizhune since 1956, and recently signed a deal with the KIBL securing their future in the city for 50 seasons.

Xyport Vikings
Goldhedge Hounds (AAA)
Sylvitur Blue Sox (AA)
Population: 739,426
Xyport (formerly Xiport) is the capital of Long Island despite being one of the smallest cities on the Island. Xyport is the cultural, scientific, economic and governmental centre of Long Island. Xyport is an important centre of maritime knowledge in the Koana Islands and is home to approximately 980 companies and 8,500 employees within the maritime sector, among which are some of the world's largest shipping companies, shipbrokers, and insurance brokers. The metropolitan area of Xyport has a population of 372,811, and it is the fastest-growing Long Island city.

Xyport is one of the most expensive cities in the Koana Islands, ranking 9th in a Cost of Living survey.

Thanks for doing this for the community. Very interested.

Questions:
--Can we assume you're include the actual quickstart file here or at Padrefan's... or does that come later?
--Given the size of the league, what are loading times like?
--What did you use to make the map?

At a Glance
The quick start consists of 36 teams in the KIBL, with 36 teams in Triple-A and Double-A respectively. All leagues play 162 game schedules with the DH rule active in all.

Only the Double-A plays a different schedule format in which you only play teams within your sub-league (this is because in my mind, the weakest teams financially wouldn't travel all over the islands to play games).

On top of the professional leagues is a 56 team College league, where you draft exclusively from. You cannot sign High School players in the Koana Islands. For this reason, the draft is held at the END of the season, after the World Series and is only 5 rounds long. The DH rule is active in the College game too. The College season is 80 games long.

Koanian's are notoriously xenophobic and for this reason only Koanian natives have and can participate in the KIBL.

The game has been played from the 1980 season up to now, so the download itself is quite large.

Where we are now
You join this league on the 30th of June 2010. Peanut Valley are the clear leaders at this stage of the season, whilst Caron is looking to break it's long play-off drought this season. Snowflake City, quite possibly the worst team, with the worst finances and one of the lowest attendances is still struggling. Along with Aigburth who are equally as poor.

What does the future hold?
Of course, the moment you start playing this game it's your world. But ideally, I would like to see Single-A incorporated and maybe shuffle some of the teams around (particularly the Pirates and Jazz who are woeful and would've moved long ago).

If the strictly Koanian players only rule frustrates you, then you could open it up to free agents from outside the Islands, and is certainly something being considered for any future updates to the quickstart.

[LINK TO QUICK START DELETED BY BRAD COOK BECAUSE OTHERS HAVE SAID IT NO LONGER WORKS]

If you have any problems or queries don't hesitate to ask.

Enjoy :-)

I have uploaded it to my website for now (link above). But if Padrefan is interested I will whack it on there too.

--Given the size of the league, what are loading times like?
Personally, I haven't had too much problem. Up until this season I only had the KIBL and College game. Now that the affiliates are in it could start to get snowed under after a couple of seasons. Despite this I think the league is still manageable, but without knowing everyone's PC specs I really can't say. I have a top end machine that runs it fine.

--What did you use to make the map?

Greenfish Relief Map Generator. It doesn't generate islands per se, so I had to muck around with a couple of different generated maps in photoshop to get the size I wanted. I added the cities and everything else using PS too.

I'm very impressed. I've used that Map Generator and been frustrated that it does not do islands. It never occurred to me to try patching one together. Thanks, I'll give it a go. I don't have PS but use Paint.net and hope to make do with that for a fictional league I'm creating.

FANTASTIC QS!!!! Thanks so much for making this available.

Took over Snowflake City....goal is to a) not get fired and b) have enough success to keep them from having to move

If success doesn't come the Pirates way, where do you suggest they and the Jazz move? I know it's my league but it's your world and I would like to stay true to your vision , especially intially.

Thanks again!

Moving the Pirates and Jazz is always tricky. Aigburth is situated on Long Island which has a number of cities to the south that are nowhere near a KIBL franchise so a quick move south to Cosby City or Cruden Bay could be in order. Shettleston is also quite large.

North Island has a city of 1.3million in Waterford and any rivalry with Rothes would be a good thing.

Elsewhere, Hollydale on the smal island state of Hollyoak would be a fantastic move, whilst Embleton, Nyhaven and Sandford City on the main land all have large populations.

I'm glad you are enjoying the QS

Hrmm, it works for me, although I did have a problem at first.

My QS was 6th on the list of QS available and it crashed. Yet when I deleted a couple of other QS folders and mine became the 5th on the list it was fine. The Major League one became 6th and that started crashing. Have a try of that perhaps?

Thanks for the kind words, gents.

I'm currently in the process of re-designing the Koana Islands map (which you view here). Once that is complete and I get back from my holiday (middle of June-ish), I will upload another quickstart that starts in 1960 and has been simmed up to 2015.

The new QS will be a copy of my dynasty (that has been put on hold whilst I finish the new map) so 3 divisions of 20 teams each with promotion and relegation between the divisions. The QS will start when a 4th division enters the fray to give you something to build up on your own.

is there any chance you could upload a world template for the Koana Islands?

the quickstart keeps giving me a "an error occurred while loading the database! could not load world file."

I've actually just finished the map which I have been working on for about 5 weeks now.

I didn't pre-order OOTP 12 but will get it on release day. When I get it I will update the new layout of the world template that comes with OOTP 12 to include the over 5000(!) towns and cities that I have now added to the Koana Islands and release the updated file.

I will also release a Promotion/Relegation league that has over 100 years of simmed seasons starting from 1900 when I'm finished.

For your viewing pleasure (and because I'm pleased with it) you can view the finished map here (please note the file is about 12mb big).
