Minor League Rehab and Conditioning Stints

This is just somehting small that I would love to see added that I think would add a bit more depth and realism to the game.

#1 - Rehab Assignments
You have a player coming off of an injury and you have the option of allowing them to make a couple of starts in the minors inorder to get their feel for their stuff and performance levels back up to their pre injury levels.

#2 - Conditioning stints
This one is pretty much the same as above except say you sign a player as a FA and you want to get them a few atbats/innings in the minors before they can join the Major League club full time. I'm not sure if they do this in MLB I may be getting it confused with the NHL!

Love to hear people's opinions on this

Ryan

Yes, love the ideas.. especially #1

Maybe they could have a "rust" level or something.. and the amount of starts in the minors is determined by the severity of the injury? Or maybe their ratings are lower until they play a few games?

I think Markus has said there is some rust coming off of a long injury. I forget what the cutoff was, but I think it was over a month for sure.

1) Are veteran players allowed to block rehab assignments?

2) Do they count as an option?

I'm going o throw this in here, but there is an injury bug where players who are not on the DL & are listed as OUT are still being played in games.

I have been wanting #1 for some time now, and am hoping that it makes it way into this version!

1. No, I don't think so.

2. No.

Would be nice if Markus can confirm this. I was under the impression that once the player was healthy and back from the injury list there was no rust involved.

Markus is notorious for leaving things like this in the dark.

No rust AFAIK. I hope all of this would be optional as rehab assignments just don't add anything to me. YMMV of course

Isn't rust one of the fields that you can see if you export the player data?

I would love to see even a rudimentary rehab function.

There definitely is rust at the beginning of the season, which gets lifted as you play spring training games (see here).

However, I do not know for sure if the same concept applies coming off an injury.

I believe a veteran can block a rehab assignment. I want to say I remember Sammy Sosa doing it when he was with the Chicago Cubs.

Rehab assignments are covered under Rule 9(f) of the Major League Rules. Here is what it says in the 2008 version of these rules:

With the written consent of the player and the prior approval of the Commissioner or the Commissioner's designee, the contract of a Major League player on a Disabled List may be assigned to a Minor League Club for the purpose of injury rehabilitation for a maximum period of 20 days in the case of non-pitchers and 30 days in the case of pitchers. A player so assigned shall continue to receive the player's Major League salary. The rights and benefits of such player that do and do not follow the player to the Minor League Club shall be in accordance with past practices. Any such service with a Minor League Club shall be deemed to be Major League service. An assignment made under the provisions of this Rule 9(f) shall not be counted as an optional assignment under Rule 11 (Optional Agreements). Waivers, pursuant to Rule 10, shall not be required for assignments made under this Rule 9(f).
There are also rehab assignments for minor league players, covered under section 2 of the same rule:

Rehabilitation assignments, per disability, shall not exceed 20 days in the case of non-pitchers or 30 days in the case of pitchers. Effect on Limits: The player shall continue to be counted towards the Reserve List limit of the assignor Club and will continue to receive salary and benefits as such. The player shall not count against the player limits of the assignee Club.

I think these would be great options to have. If you compare it to the other giant in management sims, FM, they have an injury system that players care out of training for a certain number of days and then they are allowed to start training again, though they are far from match fit. Once a ballplayer is back, especially from a long-term injury, they are going to be far from ready to just jump back in against major league hitting or pitching. If there was perhaps a conditioning scale for each player or a game readiness scale that comes up once an injury is healed, and playing in a few minor league games can help get this readiness number increased to maximum, it would be a wonderful addition to the game.

A side note: As far as I can determine, the right of a major league club to assign a player on a rehab assignment started no later than 1983—that's the first explicit reference to the rule that I have. There is no such rule in the 1979 MLR. (I don't have copies of the 1980-82 version of the rules.)

The game has DtD injuries which lowers a guys effectiveness so in a way the neccessary work has already been done. Just need to add a transition from INJURED to healthy by using a time where he is a certain percentage limited, and the more ABs/IP can bring that back up to 100%. Would also like already said, be great to include for guys you sign as FA mid season, like Roger Clemens did signing with the Astros, where he pitched one game at every minor league level before joining the major league roster. Would be cool stuff to add to the game.
