Question Will this NCAA format work?

Hi there. I'm not new to the game, but I am new to really customizing the game. I've just played MLB and fictional quickstart games for about the past two years. Can't wait til ootp12 comes out.

Anyway, I would like to set up a NCAA college league as an independent minor league with no parent or child leagues. Using the conferences as divisions and splitting the NCAA parent league into north and south sub-leagues, I've got 30 conferences/divisions for a grand total of 284 teams.

I want to have the playoffs set up into a 64 team bracket tournement with 2 seeds per conference and 4 total wildcards (2 x 30 + 4 = 64).

I want the regular season to be have 60 games per team with unbalanced scheduling to keep the play mainly within the divisions/conferences until the big tournement.

Does anything think this will/will not work? Has anyone tried anything like this? Any suggestions?

Minor Leagues can not be made independently. They must have a parent Major League and team affiliation. You could set the NCAA league up as a second league within your universe (same as like the Japanese Nippon League in a full environment game).

The game by itself does not allow tournament-type playoff setups. I suppose you could force something to work manually, but it would be pretty complicated.

You can make a custom schedules to mimic a college schedule. You might even find a couple around if you search. I know there is a least one (maybe more) college setup posted; maybe you can use the schedule portion. Making your own schedule is fairly time consuming, just as a warning.

Hope that helps!

I suppose I could just set up a major league with NCAA teams as my major league teams. Could I do this with no minor leagues to simulate a single level of competition?

What I meant by 64 team tourney, is a single elimination playoff bracket similar to the MLB style playoffs. Would ootp allow this or would it cut me off at 32 teams?

Yep, you got it. You can have a major league with no minors. The game sets you up with a reserve squad to hold extra players. Or you can just make the roster size big enough (like 50) so that it never uses the reserve squad.

I'll admit, playoff setups are not my specialty. I don't know what the cutoff is. Also, I'm not sure there is a great way to setup a league like this, due to the restrictions on the number of sub leagues and how scheduling is done. Maybe others will have better answers for these questions.

Regarding playoffs, from what I've read in the manual, you can have two sub-leagues per major league, up to 50 divisions per sub-league, not sure how many teams per division. And, you can do single elimination seeded tourneys of any size that is an exponential of 2 (2^n).

Now, one last question: Aside from manually retiring players in commish mode, is there a way to set a required retirement age or max number of service years at the Major League level? I'm trying to simulate player graduation with this format that I'm scheming above.

Is this something that has been suggested for ootp12?

I just got done setting up the postseason for my dynasty. I have 128 teams in my tournament, 64 from each subleague. I know you can only have a maximium of 90 teams from one subleague in postseason, because originally I had all teams in one league and it wouldn't let me put all 128 teams in.

Also, you'll have to manually set up the brackets within the custom playoff features, OOTP does not do this well. For example it had a # 1 seed paired to play another #1 seed in the second round. Its time consuming to set up, but if you want your tournament to be set up fairly, this is the only route you can take as far as I Know.

There are a couple of NCAA schedules you can download if you check out the sticky in the Mods>Schedule forum.

If you need help setting it up let me know, I've been able to set up a tournament with as many as 256 teams using the custom playoff feature... again time consuming...but definetly doable.
