James DeGale prospect alert.
I've been watching video of him and he is the real deal.

Agreed, I've watched several of his fights live on stream. He is above the European level already. Strangely, his countrymen are not as high on him. I think it's his brash nature, but if he and George Groves ever square off I think Degale will toy with him.

We shall see....he fights British SMW champion and rival, Paul Smith 29-1 (15) in one week. Looking forward to it!

DeGale may have the skill but he exudes a lot of false confidence. All it's going to take to ruin this guy is one loss. Groves will definitely be the one to do it.

I think Smith has a punchers chance. DeGale will probably win on cuts but i'm curious to see how he responds to a guy that isn't going to just fall over.

I think he makes rather quick work of Groves. Georges defense is to leaky.

DeGale is a REAL prospect, he won the British title in only his 9th pro fight tonight with a 9th round tko of 29-1 Paul Smith. I'm not sure if I like him as a person much but he is the real deal I think.

Is this the Paul Smith who was on a season of Contender?

What does everyone think of "Saint George" now?
DeGale faced adversity for the first time and folded. He wasn't prepared for a tough fight and his camp thought Groves would be a walk in the park. This shows you a gold medal means nothing. You have to be the complete package to be a great fighter.........not being brash and cocky to make up for what you lack on the inside. |

I didn't see DeGale fold. To be honest I thought he edged it though there were about 8 rounds that could go either way.
I was surprised that george was able to run and counter punch as effectively as he did. I expected him to be the aggressor. Not much happened until the last 4 rounds. James landed the harder punches throughout so I had him by 2. Groves is better than I thought and DeGale is not quite as evolved. But folded? Hell no. Edit: Nice call on groves winning. Hope you hit the books, he was a big dog.

The problem with boxing today is that most watching it are these "new-school" types that lend too much credibility to an undefeated record. DeGale will be a better fight due to his loss to Groves. I'm still very high on him and believe that he and I guess Groves are top-ten SMWs.

I agree IceTea, MMA, and UFC pit the best against the best and records are not held so crazy close as they are in boxing. I mean now a days a prospect loses 2 or three times it's time to hang em up??? Crazy. Degale will be just fine.

Maybe "folded" was a bit too harsh but the cut he suffered changed the way he would normally fight. Him and Groves will rematch in a few years.
Losses are too overvalued in boxing. There's a guy named Patrick Mendy who is 11-4. I think he can become a top 10-15 guy when he fully develops as a fighter......Just was thrown in way too soon against some really good fighters due to bad management. |

Yeah, that loss is the best thing that ever happened to deGale. Props to both of them for risking their "0" early on. I grew up on those kind of fights and it makes fighters better.
