The Oakland A's 2010-11 Offseason Official Thread

Well here we go, the 2010 A's finished 81-81.

What do we do about this putrid offense?

By sweeping the Mariners to end the season, the A's finished well enough to have the 18th overall pick in next year's draft... which means that pick is not protected. So I think it's safe to say they won't be going after a Type A free agent. As if they ever do anyway...

Apparently I was wrong and the draft pick IS PROTECTED.

81-81 is like kissing your sister from Detroit : SFGate: Oakland Athletics : The Drumbeat

Hmmm...

That's the million dollar question.

There isn't any hitter that I wouldn't consider upgrading on. Someone like Suzuki (or possibly Barton) may be more trouble than it's worth to upgrade.

Suzuki and Barton should be the only two who have guaranteed jobs right now.

Every other player you keep, you're sacrificing better hitting at that position to keep the guy there, so it's not necessarily worth it. Especially when Barton - don't get me wrong, I love the guy - is manning first base and that's a usually easy power position you can't use on a slugger.

I would not be surprised if they pick up the option on Mark Ellis and he's still the 2B in 2011. Same on Coco Crisp, he's at least a better leadoff hitter that we've had in awhile. Pennington didn't do anything in 2010 to lose the SS job, I'd be surprised if he's not the guy next year.

So LF/DH (Carter in one), RF (no more Sweeney!) and 3B are the most obvious upgrades. I certainly wouldn't be upset to see an upgrade over any of the aforementioned players though.

Whoa. It turns out Mark Ellis is a Type A free agent.

Type A and B Free Agents: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

This definitely changes things.

Sign Cliff Lee and then trade him for Justin Smoak and some others...

Wait, that would work for the A's, but the M's offense is worse than putrid. Hopefully Smoak can perservere, but what a tough situation for him.

The A's are in a similar position than the Giants. What hitter would *want* to come here? You have big foul lines and the last few years haven't been in contention.

The last big name hitter we had (Holiday) we traded for and really didn't want to be here.

Yeah, the only hitters who have come here via free agency (Frank Thomas, Mike Piazza, Jason Giambi) didn't have other options.

We should bring up a bunch of really good pitchers and just say F-it to hitting and just accept being mediocre at best.

Let's compare current A's hitters to past players!

Kurt Suzuki somewhat like Mike Scioscia
Daric Barton best case a Kieth Hernandez
Mark Ellis == Phil Garner
Pennington maybe a right handed Alfredo Griffin
Kouzmanoff == Ed Sprague
Rajai Davis == Vince Coleman
Coco Crips == Kevin Bass
Ryan Sweeney best case is Shannon Stewart without the SB.
Jack Cust a crappy version of Darrell Evans

Think I'm close?

Sounds like a handful of mid-80s baseball cards that you hope might be a worth a little something but are most likely commons.

The kind of cards that end up being wedges or table levels.

Bench coaches get shuffled around. I don't know how good of job Skaalen did as hitting coach, but he's gone. We get Gerald Perry back.

Young = gone. Romanick = pitching coach. Romanick's the guy who told Zeigler to go sidearm. Maybe he can tell Mazzaro to go lefty. Look out!

I'm a bit surprised that Curt Young is gone. Reports are that he wanted out, not that the A's didn't want him. I wonder if Billy & Davey lowballed Curt money wise....
