Am I correct in my understanding that there is a chance that two manually created players given the same attributes may bomb or bust?
Or is this just with cpu generated players? |

Both, manually created and CPU generated player, even though they may appear identical one may be a star and the other a dud.

Follow-up question, for anyone:
Let's say I want to create Ted Williams for my league. I could take one of the fictional players already on a roster and change all of his attributes and numbers.... OR.... I could create a player and change all of his attributes and numbers. Does it matter? I realize neither may play like Ted Williams, given randomness, but will each "created" Ted Williams have the same shot?

Why don't you import him from the database?

You can either create him by editing an existing player or play importing him via the database.

Re: Why don't i import him?
Well, I'm quite technically challenged and I don't think I have that winzip program you guys keep talking about. Was going to wait until OOTP4 was out and then try. (Let me guess, it's simpler than i think, right?)

You can get winzip for free. Just go to a search engine and search for it.

Spleen1015 - if you need someone to walk through the steps of finding and installing winzip then the database look for me on ICQ or email me, I'd be glad to help
Edit - sorry Spleen, my mistake. [ February 19, 2002: Message edited by: blmeanie ]</p>

Yes, but don't. Just go to the free agent list.

Actually.... that got me thinking. Generally speaking, I've played solo using either recent roster sets like Rolen's -- or -- if I use the lehman db for historical play, have generally stayed recent (1998 or later -- too lazy to learn how to handle expansion).
Now - I know in historical leagues you set the ratings to be based on 'remaining career' or entire career -- but I had a couple questions. 1) Those of you that are hardcore historical players... how closely does the replay match real history? I.e., have you ever seen Babe Ruth or Ted Williams totally bomb, or even become less than legendary or conversely, have you ever seen someone like a Walt Dropo or Phil Regan become HOF caliber? 2) How do you handle next year imports... I've generally used the draft - and quite obviously, it skews greatly the fortunes of certain teams (Goodbye Yankee mystique!). Do most of you assign 'rookies' to their respective teams, then let trades, free agency, etc take it from there? 3) If anyone has done both historical and fictional/modern online leagues -- which do you prefer? |

[quote]Originally posted by zonk84:
<strong>3) If anyone has done both historical and fictional/modern online leagues -- which do you prefer?</strong><hr></blockquote> I prefer fictional. There are some unusual things that can occur in the historic leagues from my experiences. The imported Lahman rookies seem to either have terrible ratings from the start (worse than real life) or have top 5 elite player ratings - very erratic. Also the players that had great years in the historic year you begin with seem to have unrealistically great careers, many will be the dominant players of the league for 7-10 years and this can make it awkward for online leagues when GM's realize this (unfair). Also, the fact you can compare the OOTP results to the players real life results can be fun, but it can also cause complaints from GM's who want their OOTP Pete Rose to match the real life Rose (without the gambling). Note: Perhaps the historic leagues I have been involved in imported the players incorrectly or something - hopefully someone corrects my observations if that is the case. About the fictional leagues: The fact there are no preconceived idea's about the players value makes online league trading easier. You'd be more likely to trade a Larry McCracken, who has Koufax-like ratings, than you would to trade Koufax himself. Since any sports text sim requires that the user enjoy using their imagination, using fictional players with a sports text sim seems like a good match. Starting in the current year is almost the same as fictional play as the % of fictional players increases each year. Edit: Geez I need to get a spelchcker! Interesting point of view Killebrew...I have resisted playing a fictional league because of the "comfort" of knowing the players and the many resources available on the actual results...But the way you framed it up with the Koufax example is great...I may just give the fictional way a chance now...
You definitely can grow attached to players...

I too really prefer the fictional players. I enjoy my team in PSBL more than my replay team because I can use my (overactive) imagination to flesh out the details about each player (personalities, backgrounds, etc...). And just the opposite of blmeanie, I take less "comfort" in having a real player with preconceived values or detriments. For example, as a real life Dodgers fan, I’d hate to have current SF Giants on my roster since I root against that team like no other. Also, I’d be less anxious to trade for Gary Sheffield than I would a fictional player with similar abilities just because of what an ass I view the player as.
