Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance: Pre-11 registration thread

The Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance is currently an OOTP X league
We will be converting to OOTP 11 in the first week of October

Please see this thread for detailed information about our current league setup

The Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance (PEBA), one of OOTP's premier participation leagues, is preparing to convert to OOTP 11. Our 2012 season is winding down an a new Planetary Extreme Championship winner will soon be crowned. Shortly thereafter, we will kick off our fully-packed off-season events calendar before switching over to OOTP 11 on in-game date February 1, 2013.

In preparation for the coming off-season and our move to OOTP 11, we'd like to invite members of the OOTP online community to
join us for upcoming 2013 season. In doing so, you will become a part of one of the best-known and most active OOTP online leagues around.

What Makes Playing in the PEBA So Special?
  • Join one of the most active communities in the game! The PEBA forums are constantly in motion, with an endless array of PEBA and non-PEBA-related topics being discussed by our intelligent and enthusiastic members. With over 32,000 posts, you can be sure there will always be something to talk about!
  • Enjoy reading the work of the most creative owners in the biz! Our extensive news archive includes almost 1,200 articles. Statistical analysis... interviews... human interest stories... humor... we've got it all, and you'll get the chance to add to the growing PEBA canon.
  • Play with owners so dedicated to realism that they will voluntarily disadvantage themselves just to make things more interesting for everyone else! Maybe it's a five-game suspension for attacking a journalist (who, admittedly, had it coming). Maybe it's donating $1.8M of your team's cash reserves to charity. Our owners put the spirit of play first.
  • Group activities abound on our schedule! Participate in our live two-day marathon draft. Tune in for live blog updates from the All-Star Game. Join your peers for the PEBA Winter Meetings, a live online gathering that creates more wheeling and dealing than you can shake a stick at. There's always something to do!
  • The commissioner of the league is an independent entity who does not own his own team. While most every commissioner is honest, the PEBA takes it a step further, removing any doubts by separating the commissioner into a full-time non-ownership role.
  • Owners have a voice in the development of the league. Each off-season, a list of "floater" proposals are sent out for owners to vote on. The will of the group can and does impact the course of our league.
  • The PEBA is the home of StatsLab beta testing. StatsLab, authored by community member fhomess, is OOTP's #1 online utility suite. PEBA owners have access to StatsLab updates before they are released to the general public. They also have the opportunity to influence the development of StatsLab with their suggestions.
  • The PEBA is the home of community member DesertFox07's upcoming OOTP fantasy baseball utility. Since this product is not yet available to the public, I can only say this: You're going to dig it!
  • The PEBA plays a major role in OOTP beta testing. Issues important to PEBA owners are brought to the attention of OOTP Developments. While nothing is guaranteed, PEBA owners can be sure that their OOTP-related concerns will receive representation.
  • Last and certainly not least, the Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance is an established league that you can count on being around for the long haul. Many start-ups advertise here. A few will stand the test of time, but who can tell which? By joining the PEBA, you are buying in to a tried-and-tested league with an established history and a certain future.
Obviously, there's a lot for potential new owners to get excited about. That's just the way it should be; we work hard to provide the most fun atmosphere around for online players. At the same time, we recognize that it takes a dedicated, creative, unique individual to get the most out of the PEBA experience. We're not looking for just any owner; we're looking for special owners.

What Qualities Should a PEBA Owner Possess?
  • First and foremost, we're a "participation league", and we're looking for "participatory owners". What does that mean? In the average league, little is expected of owners. It's acceptable to show up for the draft, check in with the team every once in awhile, maybe make a trade or two. This is what we call "disposable entertainment". That's not what the PEBA is all about. We're a league in constant motion. We're a community that's always connected, both in game and out (via, for instance, our upcoming Civilization 5 weekly game nights). When we look for a new owner, we want someone who buys into the idea that a league full of active participants is infinitely more enjoyable than a league where everyone sims in silence and isolation.
  • Sharpen your pencil! PEBA owners love to write, and we're always looking for a new literary voice. If you share a passion for creative expression through the written word... well brother, you just found your new home. You needn't ever worry about having your work judged; every submission is greeted enthusiastically. The fact that the commissioner doubles as an editor will ensure that your article come out looking professional.
  • Let us know what's on your mind! The more our owners post on our forums, the more everyone benefits. We make it easy by providing both on- and off-topic forums, opening up a limitless range of discussion possibilities. If you like to converse and share your thoughts with others, you're just the kind of person we're looking for.
  • Come armed with a positive attitude! The PEBA prides itself on its friendly (yet competitive) atmosphere. Boorish, loudmouthed behavior has no place in our group. We're a group of adults, and we treat each other with the respect we deserve. Of course that doesn't mean our competitive fires don't burn fierce!

As mentioned at the top, the PEBA is still an OOTP X league. However, we will be converting to OOTP 11 quite shortly, and you need not wait to begin your application. Ownership of OOTP X is not required! The commissioner of the PEBA will happily work with an incoming owner who does not own OOTP X to ensure that his team is set up as he would like it when our conversion to OOTP 11 takes place.

We'll be continuing our open house registration for the next few weeks leading up to our conversion to OOTP 11. I'll be bumping this thread periodically during this time to keep focus on our recruitment efforts.

The PEBA is currently in the second round of its playoffs (the Alliance Tournament), and the off-season is fast approaching. If you would like to be in a position to direct a new team from the get-go of all the off-season activities, get in touch with us right away. You'll promptly receive a reply with further information about the league and how you can get involved. We look forward to hearing from you!

Folks... The PEBA Rocks!

Where else would you find a minor league team town flooded out of their homes and reduced to the ball park - while their young 1st year player spins a no-no? Find owners turning up missing; and sports writers too?

Follow the compelling tales as they unfold - Will Yuma stop drinking the water and start winning? What of Tempe? A phoenix that has risen from the ashes of the Sonoran desert in five seasons to challenge the big boys of Aurora for the league title, will they be able to maintain the financial burden of success? Is perennial doormat Kentucky ready to knock on the door of success? Can Palm Springs rebound after their first losing season? Will San Antonio's massive turnover plan, gutting the organization become a genius stroke or a grave mistake?

The PEBA is about baseball and it's about community. A tremendous group of guys who all work for the common good as they compete for the coveted Rodriguez Cup. It may be the Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance, but it could also be the Planetary EXPERIENCE Baseball Alliance, as to be part of PEBA is to Experience PEBA. If you're looking for something to sink your teeth into and express yourself; to create your own team and organization on AND OFF the field, then PEBA is the place for you. Story writer, artist, web designer, whatever hidden talent you may have PEBA is ready to embrace your creative side. After all, this is the league who had ownership rights of one of it's flagship franchises determined by a 'child's game', while there are strange things going on in New Jersey.

If you love baseball and you love to have fun, this could be the place for you.

I highly recommend the PEBA for the ultimate online experience. This is not just a league but a highly detailed universe with dedicated owners and a commissioner so committed that there cannot be any comparison. Check us out as the Rodriguez Cup kicks off and the League of the Rising Sun finishes and heads into the Playoffs.

We will have new champions in the PEBA this years as the Manchester Maulers face off against the Tempe Knights

The 2012 Planetary Extreme Championship between the Manchester Maulers and the Tempe Knights has begun, and as you can see, Manchester has taken an early 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Later this week, the PEBA's sixth season will come to a close, and whether it's the Maulers or the Knights who take home the Rodriguez Cup, it's a guarantee that we'll have our sixth first-time champion. This is a league featuring extremely perceptive, extremely active owners, and that leads to a great deal of natural parity.

Probably most exciting is that Manchester and Tempe are both small-market teams (Tempe has far and away the smallest market in the PEBA), and both are franchises that climbed through incredible early adversity to reach this stage. It's a testament to the acumen and sticktoitiveness of Jeff of Manchester and Chris of Tempe that they've positioned their teams on the precipice of victory. Both are franchise-founding owners, and where others would have given up in despair, they found a way to rise above their circumstances. In a few days, one of them will be rewarded with the ultimate prize; the right to call themselves Planetary Extreme Champions.

The PEBA is as active, challenging, creative and welcoming landing spot as you will find in the OOTP online universe. We'd like you to become a part of the action. To get started, visit out "Join the PEBA" page and let us know about yourself. Come exercise your creative muscles; get in touch with us today!

As we continue to extend our welcome to new applicants interested in joining the PEBA, an update on the PEBA's 2012 Planetary Extreme Championship.

Very shortly, our league's sixth new champion will be crowned. Three games into the series, it seemed a foregone conclusion that champion would be the Manchester Maulers. You would think the Tempe Knights and their fans would be utterly demoralized after watching the Maulers, down to their final strike, score the game-tying run in the 9th, then go on to score two more in the 10th for a 5-4 Game 3 victory at Knights Stadium.

However, the PEBA's smallest market team has never been one to back down from a challenge. They came roaring back with a shutout win in Game 4 and a blowout in Game 5. Now they face their steepest challenge: Taking two games at Whiten Field. They've got just the guy for the job taking the mound in Game 6. Markus "Fireworks" Hancock, arguably the PEBA's #1 pitcher, will be taking the ball on just four days rest. If he can propel the Knights to a Game 7, future Hall of Famer and Robert E. Howard alternate universe refugee Conan McCullough will also be going on four days rest.

You can expect over half the league to be logged in this evening, talking, forecasting and waiting for the results to be posted. That's the kind of owners that comprise the PEBA. It's a league where people genuinely care not only about their own teams but about the fortunes of their peers, and it's one of the many aspects that make the league so much fun to participate it. We hope you can become a part of the PEBA experience and help add to the great spirit and enthusiasm this league generates.

The Planetary Extreme Championship is over and the Tempe Knights, the PEBA's smallest market franchise, are the new Rodriguez Cup winners! Read the entire series recap here. It's a testament to the skill and sticktoitiveness of our owners that little Tempe, a team that began its history with a humiliating 117-loss season, can reinvent itself as a powerhouse capable of meeting and beating the "big boys" of the league.

The series itself was a thrilling affair. Tempe's victory came after falling down three games to none. This marks the first time that a team has ever overcome that large a deficit to win a Planetary Extreme Championship. All the more reason to marvel at the accomplishments of the Knights. It's a story we'll be telling and retelling for years to come.

The PEBA is now in its off-season, and we are still on the hunt for owners interested in joining a league focused on participation, communication and creativity. If that sounds like the kind of experience you're looking for, contact us and start the process of joining right away.

With a little over two weeks before our move to OOTP 11, we continue to seek creative owners motivated to try a different kind of online league experience. Already within the last few weeks, we have added a couple of OOTP luminaries to the PEBA:
  • TribeFanInNC, our new Duluth Warriors owner, is a well-respected member of the OOTP community and beta team with 2,000 forum posts to his credit.
  • Online leaguers should be familiar with fhomess, our new Connecticut Nutmeggers owner. He is the author of the wildly useful StatsLab utility suite. The PEBA continues to server as the beta testing home of StatsLab. Members have access to fixes and feature upgrades before the general public.
You don't have to be an OOTP community superstar to join the PEBA! We welcome both experienced online players and newcomers. Give us a shout out and get to know what we're all about!

Hi Tony, glad to hear from you. What browser are you using? If it's Firefox, are you using any extensions that might cause a conflict (e.g. NoScript)? Check that first. If that doesn't fix the problem, try using a different browser, if possible. And if all else fails, you can of course PM me here on the forums. I promise not to ignore you just because you had some technical difficulties with our "Join" form! Just make sure to include your email address so that I can get back to you with our league info packet.

I can't get it to work with either IE8 or Chrome. I hover over the left image and it goes blank. And it did the same on my other computer...

Hmmm, I just tested it in the latest versions of IE, Firefox and Chrome, and it works over here on all versions. Is your JavaScript up to date on your computers? I'm assuming yes, but never hurts to ask.

I'll definitely dig into this deeper, as we don't want people attempting to fill out the form and running into difficulty. Thanks for the heads-up on this, Tony.

EDIT: Just got your PM that it's working for you after a page refresh, Tony. Thanks for the update!

We're now less than two weeks away from our move to OOTP 11, and we're still accepting pre-registration for interested applicants. We're also eight days away from the Winter Meetings, the PEBA's biggest off-season event. If you want to see the PEBA in action, this is an excellent opportunity and we would be happy to have you join us. Simply PM me here in the forums and I will set you up with a chat room account which you can use during the Meetings on Sunday, Sept. 26.

The PEBA 2012 "Best Of" Writing Awards have just been announced. During the 2012 season, PEBA owners submitted a total of 176 articles, ensuring that people can tune into the PEBA website and expect to see new and compelling content on a regular basis. Here's a sampling of some of our finest work from last season:
As you can see, PEBA owners are wildly creative, enthusiastic about their league, and extremely participatory. In addition to the constant stream of articles, our forums are alive with non-stop talk on a variety of subjects. This is just the kind of environment I know many of you are looking for. Why spread yourself thin when you can get all the content, communication, competition and challenge you're looking for in just one place?

With just over one week before our conversion to OOTP 11, now is the time to get in touch with us. Help us make our upcoming 2013 season our most fun yet!
