free agents

I've created a 2008 historical league game via the Custom Advanced method and no matter what I do everytime I start there are no free agents. Can anyone tell me how to set up the 08 season the same as if you just started a game from 2010. thanks Paul

If you create a historical league using the included Lahman DB, you won't get any free agents. That is because all of the players that the game imports from that DB are assigned to whatever team they played for at all that year. If they didn't play for anyone that year, they won't be downloaded.

The 2010 MLB game has FAs because the volunteers who created that league added them to the roster.

There are some alternative DBs and rosters available as mods that will provide FA for a number of seasons, if you want to investigate those. There are also workaround for the type of league you created, involving fictional players, which will lead to a list of FAs being created as teams release players.

Hope that helps.

You could also try this.

In commissioner mode you can release the players who were free agents at the end of 2007. In order to find them, you would need to go to baseball-reference.com and go to that year and look at the transactions to find the players who became free agents at the end of the season. Then you can "sign" the players as they signed in real life up to the date in which you want to start.

For added "realism", you may also want to reverse all of the trades that happened after the date in which you want to start so that all of the teams' rosters will be as they were at the date that you want to start. In some cases you will have to force the reversed trade in order for it to work.

It's may be a lot of extra work but that might be the only way to do it with the Lahman DB.
