Getting agreement with OOTP
I wanted to post this here first. I have discussed this a couple of times and wanted to make a formal pitch to the community and Marcus (and friends).
The proposal is the creation of a Master master.csv. I believe that some of us historical simmers have to spend a fair amout of time editing names and biographical data (I know I do) to make some of the photos - and now facegen work as well has basic height/nickname data. Spritze/Gambo have made a pass by having a unique name in theor current version based upon a quick look at the data. It then takes many hours to sift through that data for photos to match. Also, since the game doesn't support any sub-folders in the photo (or facegen) folder, you can only have one instance of the photo. So een if you start from 1871, you have to update the photo when the next Bob Jones or John Sullivan show up. If you are trying to do cross era simming (e.g. random) then it is possible to have 2 Bob Jones active. To have the phots align you have to change the names. So lets create a master file which has the names as close to official as possible (e.g. SABR) and make the tweaks to have them unique as well. Correct all the bio errors/omissions from Lahman and have each version of OOTP align with this master file. I do not think this is a difficult process once in place. Basically when the new Lahman comes out, we modify the master and send it to Marcus. I am only discussing the name and bio data not any of the other fields used by OOTP. I am certainly willing to create the master and provide updates to Marcus ot whoever in OOTP. It should not take more than a week after the Lahamn is out, so timing can't be a problem. Then we know it is in the game and in the odb file. Within the limitations of modding, this should be backward compatible to previous versions of OOTP as well. So the question is can we as a community agree to such a proposal. What might be some requirements/considerations? Will OOTP to adopt such a master file? Thoughts/comments welcome. Thanks

This would be so much easier if the players union would just insist each player to reach the majors have a unique name similar to the way the screen actors guild does. Usually I change the players names sightly, like you have referred too, Tom to Thomas, eg. or use a middle initial. But yes it is difficult sorting thru player photos and renaming them.
That said I hope there are much bigger priorities for Markus and gangs time. |

What I am suggesting is that we (the community)/I (I'm willing to undertake the effort) do it for Marcus and gang. I agree they should focus on other issues.

I think this is quite necessary as there are many critical blank spots for some reason in this year's Master file in key categories, such as birthdate, height, weight, bats, throws and retirement date even for players who've probably been dead for over 100 years (the retirement date thing is particularly annoying if you play with retire according to history on), to say nothing of the new debut and retirement date formats which leave a lot to be desired.
I have what I call a hybrid master, which combines the default debut/retirement years with the rest of the Gambo-Spritze master as well as a few other personal touch ups to make improve it a bit (I think anyway). I can offer it to Padres fan if he can host it. Would need some pointers on how to go about this though. Thanks. EDIT: Editing the damn .odb database is another matter altogether though. I don't bother with it because I just remove it from my stats folder, which of course brings about the attack of the butcher defenders in this year's game. *facepalm* Last edited by actionjackson; 08-04-2010 at 05:14 PM. |

Bump. Bristolduke: I'm still in the process of tinkering with the Master file, but I want to know where you're at in this process. Thanks.

I am merging the OOTPX and OOTP11 master files to fill in the blanks. I am waiting on a file from Tnfoto which has the SABR names to apply. It is probably only a week once I get all the files.
