Armando Galarraga has a Perfect Game stolen from him by an ump

Tonight Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers threw the 21st Perfect Game in, only the umpire incorrectly called the last runner of the game safe, ruining the Perfect Game and the no hitter. He finished it off by getting his 28th consecutive out.

I was watching the game from the beginning. After the blown call I screamed "No!" at the TV over and over like a madman. Gah, I feel sick. What should be a joyous moment for all of the Tigers and their fans has turned into a twisted mess thanks to one blown call.

Players were screaming at the ump. Right now I'm watching the catcher that called the game (Alex Avila) cry during an interview. Just horrible.

Here's a pic of the would be last out ... http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2010/06/armando_galarraga_comes_within.html

This is just sad. I feel for Tiger fans and for the game of baseball in general which tonight was denied an historic moment by a horrible call. What a disgrace.

The umpire even makes the "you're ooo..." start and then changes it to safe.

I will give Joyce credit for admitting his mistake, and not trying to hide out from the fall out.

Why is that a hit if the runner is safe. It looks like a makeable play. Shouldn't that be an error and a no-hitter at least (the scorer could make that change).

While I know MLB is loath to reverse umpiring calls, this one instance seems pretty cut and dried.

1. The outcome of the game would not change. It was the final out of the game. The Tigers still won. The two teams records would not change.

2. It is not a "maybe" call, like a ball/strike call, or a bang/bang play at first. It was extremely obvious on replay that he was out - not even close.

3. The Indians would not protest a reversal.

4. This is SUCH a historic event (only 20 ever) that it just HAS TO be recognized.

That was my 1st thought as well. It would take some of the steam out of it, and the story for the next week will be the reversal, but it seems only correct to do.

But MLB is probably more worried about opening a can of worms than doing what is right.

There were no dropped balls or missed throws. If he WAS safe (he wasn't) it would have been a legitimate infield single as he just simply beat out the throw.

Errors in baseball are weird. If a ball is hit to the shortstop and he holds onto it and doesn't bother to easily throw a dude out... single.

If two players just miss a popup between them with neither actually touching it... also a hit.

I hope it's reversed, but the thrill of it all was ruined. What should have been a huge on-field celebration did not get to happen. Regardless, if it is reversed, Selig himself should show up for pre-game honors.

No, it was slow to develop because Cabrera had to field the ball and Gallaraga was late. Note that Cabrera has to wait for him to get to the bag. There is no basis to call an error for "slowness", especially if there is no mishandling or dropping of the ball.

Darn you guys are right:

Rule 10.12(a)(1) Comment: Slow handling of the ball that does not involve mechanical misplay shall not be construed as an error. For example, the official scorer shall not charge a fielder with an error if such fielder fields a ground ball cleanly but does not throw to first base in time to retire the batter. It is not necessary that the fielder touch the ball to be charged with an error. If a ground ball goes through a fielder's legs or a fly ball falls untouched and, in the scorer's judgment, the fielder could have handled the ball with ordinary effort, the official scorer shall charge such fielder with an error.

Also:

The official scorer shall not charge an error if the pitcher fails to cover first base on a play, thereby allowing a batter-runner to reach first base safely.

Really? Why the hell do they never seem to give players errors in these situations?

There is no rule to allow for this. The Tigers can't protest 'cause they won the game. Any reversal would open a can of worms as it would say that certain "outs" are more important than others when all should be equal.

If this was reversed, think of the stink if the same botched play occurred on the first batter and a pitcher then went on to retire 27 in a row. Based on the precedent set by a reversal that subsequent game would have to be ruled a perfect game too.

Much as I sympathize with Detroit a reversal should never happen.

Seriously now, guys. This is the 3rd perfect game this year (even if MLB doesn't think so) and it's the beginning of June.

Incredible.

I still say error because Cabrera's throw was off target.
