how do you play?
Curious how other people play this game... do you start a historical dynasty in the 1920s? Or create a totally fictional league? Or play with a current team? How do you play?

I started an 8 team fictional league with 2 levels of minor leagues in OOTP X. I started expanding the league myself every few years. Now I use the "auto-expand" function in OOTP 11. I keep all the franchises in smaller cities (triple/double A size places) and do a bit of research on the city/area/region to come up with nicknames and color scheme that match.

Well, I've been playing since OOTP 4, so I've experimented with a few different styles of play. I've been a member of some great online leagues and have had quite a few very memorable solo leagues. I play all of my games out in 1-pitch mode. I generally prefer smaller leagues so I can gain a more intimate knowledge of all the players and teams in the league. Currently my brother and I are both managing our own teams in a league we started about a month ago, and we're just about to finish our first season. I always use fictional players, and in this case, we're using one sub-league of 10 teams, no DH, and the two best teams at the end of the regular 162-game season will face off in the grueling Best-of-Nine Championship Series.
I love OOTP for many reasons, but one of the best things is the unlimited number of ways to enjoy the game which gives it unprecedented replay value. |

Fictional. No expectations that way. Use feeder leagues. Play out all my team's games. Swear a lot.

Usually I always do an Expos dynasty with every version, but this year I play 19th century historical (mostly because of the new realist facegen and the draft features). I've run a test one from 1871 to 1885 to check if the game was ok and since I haven't fell on any problems I've started another one in the same period.
I ain't a great writer, but I have start a thread about my current simulation in the dynasty sub-forum.

![]() As to the question, always fictional, I have one 12 team 2 division set-up with 3 levels of minors and full financials that is in its 20th year and a similar set-up that I just started that is based on towns where I live that plays a short schedule, reserve roster, no minors, no finances. I play out most of my games by simming the first 5 innings then playing out the rest. Last edited by DCG12; 05-31-2010 at 07:02 AM. |

Start in 1974 and then straight fictional from there with no expansion or stat changes. I sim 2 weeks at a time. If I had the time I'd love to play out my games but unless I hit the lottery it ain't happening.

I play MLB start, sim most of the games, play out key divisional games, some games against elite competition, and all post season games. Games I play out I use one pitch and usually play the whole game.
Next season I may try playing every game but quick simming until the 5th or 6th inning in games that don't meet the above criteria. |

Fictional. Run a small 16 team league, plus 24 team indy league that players can jump to the bigs from. Play in god mode.

I create an entirely fictional league. I pick all of the teams, find all of the logos and start in 1980 or so. Then I allow it to sim until present day. I pick the HOF's. Then I take over the team with the absolute worst record after the 30 years of simming. After 5-10 years, I usually add an extra 4 teams or so to my league. Oh, and I also use feeder leagues throughout. I usually sim a week at a time and love to watch prospects boom or bust.

My way is "OOTP ADD." --meaning I jump from doing a sim-style history of baseball ala Tigerfan, to trying to create the perfect fictional league in a fast sim.
I have done part fictional part historical leagues (one-pitch mode) and enjoyed them immensely. I also enjoy doing a historical franchise with the Pirates from either '79,'92, or '86. I have also played around with being a greenhorn-type manager and starting in rookie ball, but recently I have doing the MLB modern setup (year 2000) with all fictional players. The crazy thing is I am always finding new ways to enjoy the game and that is a great testament to the brilliance of the game. |
