Tough Decision

My stud 33 year old pitcher has an expiring contract and I don't have enough $ to resign him. He's a perennial Cy Young candidate and has anchored my team since I took over as manager (7 years). In 7 years I have 2 playoff appearances (2 first round exits), and finally I've built a strong enough pitching staff to support Colon. Normally this would be an easy trade, getting a top prospect for the expiring. But I really want to win the ship this year. and my team is amazing (best hitting, and top 3 pitching).

Chavez has 5.5M arbitration estimate (3 arb years left), couch is min contract. Couch is rated #7 overall prospect by OSA but my scout (favors tools, legendary) doesn't like him as much.

This is fictional league with MLB setup, arbitration/FA compensation/etc

I say keep him and go for the win. Your hitting is already the best so improving that area really isn't that big of a deal. Also you will at least get a good draft pick for him.

If you're competative you have to go for the Championship, ALWAYS.

I assume that Colon is a Type A FA, so you won't walk away empty handed if you can't resign him in the offseason.

Plus, by the looks of it you'll also take a fan base hit by trading him.

Keep Him.

Yeah if you have a chance to win, you don't trade your best players. It's typically only teams who are out of the pennant race who trade players for prospects so that "one day" they'll be good. Like my Blue Jays - see Halladay, Roy.

I love threads like this.

If you feel this is your year, go for it.

I also love threads like this and I also say go for it. The fans won't forgive you if you don't!

EDIT: Not to mention, one day when Colon enters the Hall of Fame you want him to be able to say in his acceptance speech that his favorite year was the one when he delivered a championship to your team!

Thx for the replies. I kept Colon and the team finished with 99 wins (yes I played 2 months since this afternoon ). Divisional series is tied 2-2, update when it's over!

Has a first place team ever traded their ace for prospects at the deadline?

Gotta take your shot at the Championship.

arghhhh. 3 outs away with a 3 run lead in top of 9th of game 6. My ace closer proceeds to choke and we allow a 5 run Yankee 9th and lose. In game 7 it's 1-0 in bottom of ninth runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. I try to score on a single up the middle but am thrown out at the plate! In 18 year league history, Yankees win their 8th World Series in 9 tries. Pretty sad that this is probably the last shot for this group of guys.

Tell me about it, and even Ricciardi managed to screw that up.

Anyhow, try to win, there is always July if your season is in the tank.

I feel for you. I actually won the WS last year. I think my Braves are turning into the Yankees as we are dominating again and may be looking at a 2nd straight.

Ruins your night doesn't it? Sucks...

hindsight is 20-20, but Chavez is quite the stud

I'm with you, I would have went for the WS trophy!

One reason I prefer to go for the title in situations like this one is that I hope pennants or World Series titles will help my team's market grow.

Bad poll. You left out the "Monkey Rodeo" option.

Plus you need a fear choice. Face it, a guy named "'Wacko' Colon" is scary.

I would keep him as well. I always focus heavy on pitching. I just cant stand the fact of giving up a good pitcher and having to watch him succeed on another team before i have to let him go.
