Player ratings vs. Real-life statistics
I'm confused about how the player ratings interact with the player's real-life stats, especially with regard to how OOTP determines the outcome of the games, i.e., the pitcher-batter confrontations, etc.
In the Game Options window, there is the AI Player Evaluation Options. I assume this basically refers to how the computer-GMs will deal with their rosters and how they will respond to trades. Is this correct, or do these weights affect how the players actually perform in the games? In the Historical Settings window, there are several options under Player Ratings. For example, there is the Ratings Recalculation Base. What exactly is being recalculated? Is it simply the scouting report for the player, or is something happening to the player himself that will affect how he performs, and therefore also affect how the games turn out? The next option is for Ratings to be based on Real Stats or Neutralized Stats. But again, what exactly are the "ratings?" Does my choice affect my scouting reports and how the other GMs respond to trades, or does it affect the outcome of the games? I've read the online manual several times and I can't figure out the answers to these questions. Sorry if they are dumb questions. Thanks for any help. -- Rodney Dunning |

You know what they, No dumb questions onlt dumb answers. My trying skills are bad and this probably needs a very long answer to address all of your questions, but here is a shot.
First, Neutralized stats are a player's real-life stats adjusted for Era, Park, etc against a middle of the road standard. I believe it is 765 team runs per season. So when you asked what you want the basis of the player's ratings to be is it theie real life stats of a neutralized set. The game comes with the neutralized set included. You also get the option of basing the stays off a season or his entire career. Re-Calc is a method of controlling the player's development. There is a player development model in the came (obviouosly used on fictional players). It will be used on historical players if Re-calc is turned off. So folks find that leaving development to the game doesn't create accurate enough performce. So you can have a player's rating "Re-Calculated" every year. That re-calc can be based on a single year, a 3 year span or a 5 year span, but it is done every year. It should be noted that the game's player development model runs all season, so you could see changes in your historical ratings even using re-calc, but they are re-set to the re-calc formula at the end of the year so there is no carry forward effect. Re-calc is perfomed as the previous season ends (just after playoffs). There is also a re-scout function which occurs on 1 Jan of the next year. This doesn't change the ratings only the scouts view of the player with the new ratings. You are correct that the AI player evaluation options deal with how the AI views the player. Remember the AI is viewing ratings and Stats and you are controlling how the ratings are generated every year. Hope that helps.
